Monroe – Justin James Smith, 36, of Monroe, MI, passed away unexpectedly on September 17, 2022, in Lake City, Michigan.
He was born May 26, 1986, in Carson City, MI, the first-born son of Carol Jernstadt. Justin grew up in rural St. Johns, MI, and is a 2004 graduate of St. Johns High School. Following high school, he attended the University of Northwest Ohio studying auto mechanics.
Justin worked for many years as a diesel mechanic in the Monroe area and he is currently employed by Bucks Mechanical LLC as a mechanic. Justin had a life-long love for fishing, watching NASCAR racing, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his sons Mason and Myles Smith; his mother Carol of Rockwood, MI; two brothers Travis (Rachel) Smith of New Boston, MI and Luke Smith of Grand Ledge, MI; niece Adelaide Smith; his grandmother Colleen Smith of Lansing; best friend and Love of his life Melissa Nagel Day and her sons Robert and Travis Day; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Justin was proceeded in death by his brother Ethan Smith, cousins Austin Blemaster, Joey and Tyler Jones, grandparents James Smith, Jim and Betty Jernstadt, uncles Ace Jernstadt and Karl Blemaster.
A memorial service and luncheon will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Maple Rapids Community Center, 209 Union St., Maple Rapids, MI 48853. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the education fund for Justin's sons. Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
