Justine (McCarthy) Caldes, age 89, of Albany, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Monday evening, August 25, 2025.
Justine was fiercely independent with more energy than one might imagine could exist in her small frame. She was unapologetically true to her own nature, proud of her knowledge and accomplishments in her life's work, and endlessly loyal to those she loved. Justine was welcoming to people from all walks of life, often introducing others to new cultural experiences. She will be greatly missed.
Justine graduated from the Academy of Holy Names in Albany, N.Y., and furthered her studies at the College of St. Rose, where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree. She wore many hats in her career, and ultimately found her calling working as a family systems and alcoholism counselor in the late '70s. She served in this role until her retirement in 2015.
Throughout her life Justine loved performing in theater, and was especially fond of musicals. Favorite shows where she held leading roles include Bells are Ringing, Gypsy, Guys and Dolls, The Boys from Syracuse, Catch Me if You Can, Oklahoma, The Sound of Music, The Last of the Red-Hot Lovers, Lady on the Rocks, and A Touch of Rogers.
Justine was born on September 26, 1935, in Teaneck, N.J., the daughter of the late Francis and Marie (McCall) McCarthy. She was predeceased by her brother, Frank McCarthy.
Justine is survived by her children, Constance Caldes of Colchester, Vt., and George Caldes of Guilderland, N.Y.; grandchildren, Tara Mah (Eric) and David Mah; great-granddaughter Sylvie Baribeau; and her beloved cat, Navi.
