Ka P. Squire Jr. was born on November 21, 1931, to Ka P. and Abigail (Chapik) Squire in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from the University of Colorado and married Sally Brown of Des Moines, Iowa, on June 19, 1954.
Ka was in the real estate and insurance business with his father at Squire Land and Loan Company. His son, Richard, joined the business in 1980, and in 2004, Squire Lussem Agency celebrated its 100th anniversary. Ka served as President of the South Dakota Independent Insurance Agents Association.
Ka was an avid fisherman and hunter, taking annual fishing trips to Canada and Spearfish, SD. He developed lifelong friendships with his hunting and fishing friends. Ka and Sally spent their summers at their cabin at Richmond Lake, enjoying family and friends, hosting the Aberdeen Ambassadors and Lions club picnics, and many memorable Fourth of July parties. On most summer nights, Ka and Sally could be found taking evening sunset cruises around the lake. In the winter, they vacationed in Cabo San Lucas and Key West, Florida.
Ka was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church (now known as Aldersgate). Ka lived out his Christian faith by serving others. Ka was a Boy Scouts leader, a proud member of the Lions Club for over 70 years, an avid supporter of The Salvation Army, served on the Dakota Midland Hospital board, was president of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce, and was part of the “Ambassadors” organization that promoted Aberdeen. Ka was a true believer in philanthropy, supporting numerous organizations in Aberdeen and the surrounding area. He was a “quiet” philanthropist, not seeking public recognition.
Ka is survived by his children: Kip (Deb) Squire of Bennington, NE, Richard (Pam) Squire of Aberdeen, SD, and Susie Flynn of Tellico Village, TN; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
