Kalpana Bapat Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wake Funeral & Cremations Services, Inc. on Mar. 19, 2026.
Kalpana Bapat was born in January 1935 and recently passed away on March 16, 2026. Kalpana graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Sanskrit, and married at the age of 22 to Purushottam D. Bapat. They lived in New Delhi and had 3 daughters. The family moved to New York in 1976 where Kalpana joined the workforce, working for the City of New York City for almost 20 years. She was quick to adapt to new environments and was extremely tech savvy for her age.

Kalpana never missed an opportunity to sing. She and her 7 siblings shared a joy of singing. Her melodious voice was a beautiful thing to hear. She was a self-taught harmonium player, and in her post-retirement years, she also learned how to sing songs in other Indian languages such as Kannada, Gujarati, and Telugu. She loved to sing Marathi Bhavgeet, Hindi Bhajans, and even Bollywood songs. In her later years, she taught her friends singing and provided music lessons virtually.

After her husband passed away in 2002, Kalpana went to live with her youngest daughter, Anamika, in New Jersey. Here she discovered new hobbies such as painting, gardening, and playing billiards at the South Brunswick Senior Center and even went on to win Wii Bowling tournaments! During the winter seasons she spent time with her middle daughter Bhavana in California. In 2019, she moved to North Carolina to live with her eldest daughter, Kavita. As an active member of the HSNC Senior Club, she participated in Geet Gunjan the Senior Karaoke Group, Sankeertan the Senior Bhajan Group, and various other local Karaoke Groups. She was the inspiration behind the creation of the Madhur Marathi Sugam Sangeet Karaoke Group.

Kalpana lived a wonderful, full life. She is survived by her 3 daughters, Kavita, Bhavana, Anamika, and their families.
