After spending her final days in the loving embrace of her large family, on April 4, 2024, Karen Elissa Pease Flinders, age 83, returned home to the God who gave her life, to be reunited with her eternal sweetheart William.

Officially mother to 9 (and unofficially to many more who claim her), Karen leaves behind a brother, Ernest Holton (Teresa), many half brothers and sisters, and children Martha Hunt (Marcus), John Flinders (Leslie), Daniel Flinders, Rebecca Borelli (Matthew), Peter Flinders (Erin), Katherine Brown (Nathaniel), Benjamin Flinders (Kerrie), Samuel Scott Flinders Sr. (Allison), Timothy Flinders, her unofficially adopted daughter Jules Webster, and 34 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Karen was born in California in 1940 to Leonard Pease and Virginia Broberg. In 1958 she graduated from Burbank High School in California and received her license as a vocational nurse. In 1960 she married William Flinders in the Los Angeles temple. They made Burbank their home for many decades where they raised their nine children. They also had three foster daughters. An amazing seamstress, quilter and baker, Karen was a wonderful wife, mother, neighbor, and friend.

When most of her children were grown, Karen returned to college and in 1996, graduated from Glendale Community College as a Registered Nurse.

Karen always enjoyed giving service, whether it was making jam or bread bears for others, quilts for her grandchildren, bringing someone food, welcoming her children’s friends to the table for meals or embracing various church callings such as Primary president, Relief Society president and as a missionary. Karen served three missions with her husband and a fourth as a mission nurse.

In 2017 Karen and Bill sold their beautiful home in Burbank and moved to Layton, Utah where they made many new friends. In 2021, Karen’s sweetheart passed away after nearly 61 years of marriage.

Karen reached out to all around her and loved all those who reached back.  She especially appreciated all the medical professionals that helped her have a healthy and vibrant life; the Fairfield Village team who became home and family; Curtis, James, Jason, and Larry, her awesome drivers; the ICU staff at McKay-Dee Hospital, Visiting Angels and Inspiration Hospice’s Angie and Ciara and their tender care.

Karen leaves a legacy of faith and friendship. To know her was to love her and to feel loved by her. Nothing was more important to her than her faith in God and in her Savior and to try to be like them. A woman of faith, she desired her posterity to “Remember” – to remember who and whose we are. That is how she nearly always ended her letters to her children. Remember.
