Karen was a lovely lady and never without a smile. She and Martin with the rest of our friends living in Germany enjoyed get togethers sharing good food, laughs and the "war stories" we all had working for the Army. It was a pleasure being in their company. My sympathies and condolences to Martin and all of her family.

Karen's dad and my dad are cousins. Even so, I didn't meet Karen until we moved to Heidelberg, Germany.
It was quite a surprise to find someone from my family there in such a far away place. Knowing she was there as well went a long way toward normalizing the experience of being a girl from North Dakota living abroad. We went out for lunch and I ordered gnocchi with Gorgonzola cheese for the first time. It is remains one of my favorite dishes.
I am sorry she is gone. She was a bright light and source of comfort in what was a confusing time for me.
