Karen Safran Obituary

Our beloved wife, linemother, and mama, Karen lineLorraine Safran line(formerly Hause), 73, of Sewickley, passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Karen was born on September 20, 1950, to Julia and Morris Hause in Johnstown, PA. She was the cherished third child and only daughter in a close-knit family, growing up in West Newton, PA surrounded by her loving and extensive extended family. After graduating from Yough High School, Karen pursued her education at Robert Morris University, earning her associate's degree. In her twenties, she embarked on a career as a paralegal in Pittsburgh, demonstrating dedication and skill in her profession. In October 1974, Karen met the love of her life, Lewis Safran, on a blind date, and they were married in May 1976. Their union was blessed with four daughters: Kimberly, Gwendolyn, Lucinda, and Chelsea. Karen wholeheartedly supported Lewis in managing the family business, Safrans Supermarket, while devoting herself to the upbringing and nurturing of her children. Beyond her role as a dedicated mother and wife, Karen was a self-taught investor with a fervent passion for the stock market. Karen enjoyed significant success with investing, and her mood was often tied to the performance of the Dow. Karen was a natural storyteller and family historian, delighting in sharing cherished memories with her children and grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered for her sharp memory and unwavering support, serving as a steadfast rock in her daughters' lives. Her love for travel led her to explore many destinations, with Hawaii holding a special place in her heart. She delighted in sharing memories of family vacations, as they often sparked laughter and joy among all. Karen was a member of the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Friendship Preschool board and was a member of the women's committee. She deeply appreciated the fellowship the church provided when she first became a mother. Known for her generous spirit, Karen found joy in giving gifts and celebrating the achievements of her loved ones. Her deep affection for animals was evident in her compassionate nature, always saving a portion of her meal for her beloved dogs. Karen is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, Lewis Safran; her daughters, Kimberly (Adrian Juarez), Gwendolyn (Michael McGrogan), Lucinda, and Chelsea; and her five cherished grandchildren: Zea, Sebastian, Simon, Elias Juarez Safran, and Edward McGrogan Safran, all of Sewickley. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Eunice Hause of West Newton; and sister-in-law, Pearl Hause of Tucson, AZ; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Julia (Cottle) and Morris O. Hause, and her brothers, Morris W. and Duane Hause. A Memorial Service was held to celebrate Karens life on Saturday, March 2nd, at 11:00 a.m. in Sewickley Presbyterian Church, 414 Grant Street, Sewickley, PA 15143.
