Karen Rae Sund, passed away peacefully at Stormont Vail in Topeka, Kansas on June 25, 2025.
Karen was born on June 8, 1943, in Yankton, South Dakota, to parents Raymond John Countryman and Kathryn (Sonnichsen) Countryman. Karen graduated from Crofton High School and furthered her education from the Stormont Vail School of Nursing. Later in her career, she received her Orthopedic Nurse certification from that institution. She had a successful career as a registered nurse for over twenty years at Kansas Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Topeka, Kansas. Karen was a past president of the National Orthopedic Nurses Organization.
Karen married Douglas R. Sund in Crofton, Nebraska in 1962 and later divorced. Karen was blessed with two children, her son, Maurey Sund (Darcy), Overbrook, and daughter Tammy Sund, Topeka; 5 grandchildren, Levi Sund, Shelby Sund, Kaylee Schoch (Trent), Bryan McGrew and Lesley Cline (Daniel); 3 great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Mazie and Tilly. Karen was preceded in death by her parents Ray and Katie Countryman, half siblings, Wayne Countryman, Rodney Countryman and Marlyn Poe.
Her passion for golf grew immensely upon retirement, moving her to Sun City, Arizona, to hit the golf courses with Palm Trees!! Her license plate "Hole in one times three" (HOLN1X3) sums it up! Karen's love for travel took her many places. Her biggest dream was to travel to Africa, Russia and Scotland to play golf on the St. Andrews course (in which she did all 3!). Those who knew her knew she loved the color red and her Nebraska Cornhuskers!! "GO BIG RED"
A celebration of life is scheduled for July 12th, 2025, at the Overbrook Library, 517 Maple Street in Overbrook, Kansas from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Chapel Oaks is honored to serve the family.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the University of Nebraska Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Research Center or Alzheimer's Association sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box 280, Hoyt, KS 66440.
