Karla Dickinson Barry

Dr. Karla Dickinson Barry, aged 76, passed away on November 22, 2023, in Englewood, Colorado. Born on February 17, 1947, to Karlos and Kathleen Terrell Dickinson, Karla was a beacon of lifelong learning and advocacy. She completed her studies at Illinois Wesleyan and the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1969. She later earned a master's degree from the University of Denver in 2004 and a Ph.D. from Colorado State University in 2020.
Karla often said that being a mother was her most cherished role. Her professional career was equally distinguished, with significant roles at Janus Capital, Nordstrom, Citigroup, and Pinnacol Assurance. Her commitment to women's rights and education continued in her role as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver. Beyond her professional achievements, Karla embraced the joys of life with a unique flair. A fan of James Taylor and Kenny Loggins, she also had an eye for great fashion, kept up with the latest trends, and loved a red Mustang, having owned several in her lifetime.
Karla married William Hurley in 1971, and though their marriage ended, they remained friends and devoted parents to their sons, Patrick Karlos and Ryan Dickinson, who both survive her. Karla later found love again with Fred Staab, her partner for over a decade, with whom she enjoyed exploring trendy restaurants and who also survives her. She held a special place in her heart for Patrick Swayze's "Dirty Dancing." There was no better time than a family holiday with Karla and her sister Krista, which always involved copious amounts of mimosas, laughter, and an occasional burnt pie. She had also mastered the art of baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie, a skill she loved sharing with her grandchildren and cherished by all who had the pleasure of tasting them.
Dedicated to her family, Karla divided her time between Colorado and Hawaii to stay connected with her children and grandchildren. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law Jennifer (Patrick) and her grandchildren Emily and Sean in Denver, as well as by her daughter-in-law Rachel (Ryan) and her grandchildren Lincoln and Sachi in Honolulu. She was a long-time supporter of the Women's College of the University of Denver. In recent years, her advocacy efforts extended to The Rocky Mountain Children's Health Foundation and the National Kidney Foundation after her grandson Sean was diagnosed with kidney disease. Karla also leaves behind her sister Krista Dickinson, nephew Matteson, and niece Katelin.
Celebrations of life for Karla will be held in Hawaii and Denver in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of her favorite charities listed above.
