Dell was born July 31, 1930, at home in Campbell, TX to James A. "Babe" Ray and Lora Green Ray. The youngest of three children, Dell grew up with a sunny disposition on the heels of the Great Depression. In the small Caney Community, Dell could remember growing up and helping her dad pick cotton as a little girl, selling their milk once a week and family trips to town to barter their butter with the butcher, who would later become her father-in-law.
She graduated Campbell High School at 17 years old in 1947, where she was the Manager for the Girls Basketball team and was voted "Most Beautiful Girl" of her high school senior class. After high school, Dell met Preston Lockhart, and they married on May 14, 1949, in Sulphur Springs. They moved around Texas with Preston's job (El Paso, Powderly, Dallas, Fort Worth) for several years, welcoming two beautiful daughters, Lisa in 1956 and Karen in 1958, before settling in Weatherford in 1972 where she has lived in the same home for the last 52 years.
As a faithful wife, mom, and grandmother "Mimi", Dell always encouraged her family's endeavors by attending every event. Always dressed to the "nines", she was an excellent seamstress making many of their clothes. While Preston attended SMU, she worked at the Murry Gin Company and Sunshine Biscuits Company to support them. Later, after the girls were in High School and college, she worked as a Secretary for Parker County Probation Office. While in Ft Worth, she was active in the CPA wives club and the Treasurer of the Fort Worth Lady Lions Club.
Retiring in the 80s, Dell and Preston pursued their love of traveling in the family RV and taking many cruises. Her passion to cruise was shared with her family on many occasions creating cherished memories and lots of laughter. She maintained an active lifestyle even into her 90s, working out three days a week with her dear friends Marsha, Cindi, Cleo and Jan. As a lifetime music lover, she went to the Lowrey Organ School and learned to play the organ. She also loved listening to her grandson play classical guitar.
Dell lived her life with tenacity and strength, enduring many tough seasons with a smile on her face and knowing that nothing was insurmountable. Even in her fight against two cancers, she was confident she would overcome them. She loved her family and friends alike with grace and joy. While her tender spirit will be greatly missed on this side of Heaven, her family rejoices in seeing her again glorifying God for an eternity.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her brother Gene Ray and sister Freda Morgan.
Her legacy lives on in her two daughters, Lisa Wingert and husband, Dave of Rogers, Arkansas and Karen Wagner and husband, Brett of Granbury, Texas; grandson, Miles Wagner and wife, Blair; great-grandson, Brett Wagner; 3 step-granddaughters, Tracy Smith and husband, Vaughn, Shannon Woods and husband, Greg, and Amy Wingert; nephews, David Nichols and wife, Lesa, Brent Bonner, Vance Bonner and wife, Jennifer; niece; Lori Sims and husband, Greg; and many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
