Funeral services for Garry T. Boyd, 76, of Gladewater, Texas, will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, May 23, 2025, at Union Grove ISD Lion Center. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Thursday, at McWhorter Funeral Home.
Garry was born on May 25, 1948, in Greenville, Texas to Arthur Truman Boyd and Vera Bettye Boyd and passed from this life on May 19, 2025.
Garry graduated from Campbell High School in 1966. He earned his bachelor's degree from East Texas State University and his master's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.
Garry married Betty Jane Steelman on December 28, 1971. He was the agriculture science teacher at Union Grove ISD for 43 years before retiring. Garry enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, serving others, attending church activities, working in the barn, and showing livestock animals with the Union Grove FFA chapter.
His treasured accomplishments included being selected as the Texas winner of the National Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association Award for outstanding Vo-Ag teacher in June 1987, having a student serve as Texas State FFA President in 1999-2000, awarded the Texas 4-H Salute to Excellence Honoree in 2019, and being inducted into the Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas Hall of Fame in 2022.
Garry was the epitome of selfless service to youth and agriculture in their community. His love for kids, livestock showing and agriculture has spanned over 40+ years of service and impacted hundreds of youth and their families. Mr. Boyd truly enjoyed working with the youth and watching them grow in the show ring, classroom and life. Each youth knew he cared for their well being and success in life. He didn't just talk to parents about their children, he showed the youth they were valued. Mr. Boyd's former students benefited from his tremendous integrity, caring and kind spirit, competitive nature and winning attitude.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The family would like to thank the Hospice Plus Care Team and Shaconena for taking such loving care of Garry.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty Boyd; son, Todd Boyd (November); daughters, Karen Potter (Michael), and Lisa Arrington (Jay); sister, Bettye Ann Humphries; grandchildren, Elizabeth Samples (Todd), Patrick Boyd (Nequoia), Jacob Boyd, Katherine Potter, Rachel Potter, Boyd Potter; great-grandchild, Story Samples; and many nieces and nephews.

Garry was the definition of a wonderful human being. He was a great mentor, friend, and teacher. I was privileged to have been a part of the Union Grove family and to know him. Garry was a man of sterling integrity and faithfulness, hardworking and kind. He lived his faith and was an example of what it means to be a good husband, father, friend, teacher, and community volunteer. He was truly one of a kind. I pray that his family finds comfort in knowing what a great legacy he leaves to them and everyone who knew him. May our God and Heavenly Father provide peace and hope at this difficult time. I love you all!

As a young Ag Teacher, Garry was not only a mentor, but a true friend.

Fond memories from years past of Garry and other cousins playing on horse drawn equipment as youngsters at our grandparents´ place to hearing of Garry´s success as a vocational agriculture teacher leading young people in their successful efforts on FFA judging teams. We pray for peace, comfort, and strength for all the family now and in the days to come.
