Katherine Brumley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2010.
BRUMLEY, Katherine Louise Campbell, of 500 Tuckahoe Boulevard, Richmond, died unexpectedly on January 28, 2010. Katie, the daughter of William A. Campbell and Lynnette H. Campbell, was born in Durham, North Carolina, and grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She attended Sweet Briar College from 1992-1996. During the summer of 1995 Katie attended St. Anne's College, Oxford, as a participant in the Virginia Program at Oxford University. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Government, Magna Cum Laude, and was presented the Anne Gary Parnell Taylor Award in History. After graduation from Sweet Briar, Katie joined Hunton & Williams as a Case Clerk and worked in that capacity for three years. In 2001, Katie received the degree of Master of Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia and was recognized by the American Institute of Certified Planners as the outstanding planning student. She then joined the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in Washington, D.C., and did distinguished work with the Trust protecting and enhancing buildings in an historically African-American neighborhood near the city's new convention center. In 2003, Katie married Robert H. Brumley III, and in 2004 they moved to Richmond. She was selflessly involved at her children's pre-school, Reveille Weekday School, and an active volunteer with the former Kid's Carniball Guild of the Children's Museum of Richmond. Katie lived her life to the fullest. If the task at hand was a history paper, then it had to be the best history paper in the class. If the issue was a party, then it would be the best party anyone had ever attended. To every undertaking she brought high intelligence, a bright spirit, a wry wit, deep compassion and joy. She was a devoted, loving, and imaginative mother, a caring and beloved wife, and a loyal and generous friend. All who knew and loved her will treasure their memories of her, and their "Katie stories". Katie is survived by her husband, Robert H. Brumley III, their children, Campbell Grayson Brumley and Robert H. Brumley IV; her sister, Anne Elizabeth Lund, of Durham, North Carolina; her brother, Alistair E. Campbell, of Utica, New York; and her parents, Lynnette H. Campbell and William A. Campbell, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held for Katherine Louise Campbell Brumley on February 4, 2010, 11 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, Richmond, to be followed by interment, 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Miller's Tavern. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Bank of America for the Sweet Briar College Memorial Fund for Katherine Campbell Brumley.
