Katherine was born on September 17, 1935 in the Panama Canal Zone to Charles and Mae Cross. She was later joined by her younger brother Charles K. Cross, Jr.
She enjoyed a happy childhood in the Canal Zone, eventually graduating from Balboa High School. Katherine headed off to college at the University of Maryland where she studied elementary education and made many life-long friends.
On one of her trips home to the Canal Zone on the Panama Line cruise ship, Kay met the love of her life, William Carson. After several years of a long-distance relationship, Kay and Bill married in 1957. They lived in Beltsville, Maryland for a short time where Katherine started her teaching career. After several snowy winters, they relocated to south Florida and made Miami their forever home.
They welcomed their first son, William J. Carson III in 1960 and a daughter, Stephanie in 1962.
Steven joined the Carson family in 1974, making the gang complete.
Katherine touched hundreds of children's lives through her dedicated teaching career that spanned nearly thirty years. There are many kids who fondly look back on their first-grade year in the "Little Red Schoolhouse" at North Miami Elementary. After her retirement, Katherine continued to touch children's lives but those a bit closer to her.
"Ma Ma", as her five grandchildren called her, was very present in their lives. From caring for babies and toddlers while their parents worked, to making pancakes with sprinkles, William, Timothy, Megan, Billy and Ashley knew Ma Ma would spoil them.
She was at hockey and baseball games, dance recitals and school shows. Probably her favorite place to spend time with her family was her cabin at Indian Hammock. She loved exposing her grandchildren to nature and giving everyone a chance to unwind. Kay's green thumb was a superpower. Her love of growing things, especially orchids, was her passion. She could get anything to bloom, especially the love of her family. Katherine will be remembered and missed by many.
She is reunited with her love, Bill and her son Steven. May she enjoy eternal peace.
