Died: September 28, 2025 in Peoria, Illinois
Katherine "Kathy" Faye Sammons, age 86, of Hennepin, passed away peacefully at OSF St. Francis Hospital Sunday, September 28, after complications of an extended illness. Preceding her in death was her mother, Dorothy Wilcoxon Shaw; sister, Jeanette Polley; brother-in-law, Russell Polley; grandson, Michael Zeman; and nephew, Michael Feazell.
Surviving is the love of her life, Fred. The couple would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this December. Her children: Jeff (Elizabeth) Sammons, Rhonda (Joe) Zeman, Mindy Sammons, Greg Sammons and Barry Sammons. Her grandchildren: Jim (Gillie) Sammons, Sarah (Nathan) Senica, Ali (Jordan) Fisher, Brandon Sammons, Alexa (Bailey McQueen) Sammons, and Sophia Kiselova. Her great grandchildren: Lia (Shane) Tonnies, Brody Toth, Autumn and Connor Blair, Charlotte and Sam Fisher, Lila, Daniel and Drew Senica. One great great grandchild: Chevron Reynolds. One sister, Glenda Mack. Many more family members and beloved friends also survive.
Katherine loved her family fiercely and nothing brought her more joy than taking care of them. Affectionately known as Booka, Kathy was everyone's grandma-no strings attached. Neighborhood kids? Check. Friends of her other grandkids? Check. The paperboy? Never met him but probably. Her grandkid by marriage? You're in. Forever.
Kathy was a life-long member of the Hennepin United Methodist Church and through the years served in many capacities. Booka was an amazing cook. A few of her signature dishes included biscuits and gravy, pizza from scratch, and dozens of different Christmas cookie varieties. She enjoyed gardening and decorating her home decades before HGTV was cool and earned the nickname Caulking Queen. Kathy was an avid reader and looked forward to weekly card games and dinners with old and new friends. She will be remembered fondly for her warmth, hospitality and determination.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 4th at the Hennepin United Methodist Church from 10am to 12pm. A memorial service officiated by Rev. Phil Jackson to immediately follow.
Dysart – Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements.
