Katherine Stark Obituary

Katherine Stark

Enfield, NH - In Loving Memory of Katherine Anne (Hammond) Stark

February 7, 1975 - March 21, 2024

Katherine Anne Stark, age 49, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Eugene, Oregon, and brought beauty, adventure, and fearlessness into our lives. Katherine graduated from Portland State University in 2000 with a degree in Economics and earned a Masters of Science in 2019 from the University of Portland.

She is survived by her grandmother Charlotte, mother Ruth, father Rory, sisters Kimberly and Cassandra, nephew Jarred, and many other extended family members and friends.

Katherine was a quiet servant in this world. She dedicated her time to volunteering in various areas, including homeless shelters, her church, and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), where she ran Family to Family Classes, support groups, and much more. Her commitment to helping others was also evident in her active involvement in Toastmasters International, where she served as an officer in three clubs, earned numerous awards, including the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM), and inspired those around her.

While she spent most of her life in Oregon, her move to New Hampshire in 2020 was a new and exciting adventure. Though we missed her in Oregon, we were inspired and honored by the community she found. She said she felt as if she had always been a New Englander at heart and had finally found her home.

We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support during Katherine's illness. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the medical team at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Jack Byrnes Hospice Center, as well as the many friends who stood by her.

A celebration of Katherine's life will be held on Saturday, March 30th, at 11:00 am at Union Church, 1042 NH Route 4A, Enfield, NH. Family and friends are invited to join us in honoring her memory and sharing stories of her life. A service will also be held in Oregon at a later date.

Instead of flowers, please consider sending a card or note to someone you care about.

"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31

Forever in our hearts, Katherine will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Loved & not forgotten.
At the Union church in Enfield, NH, Katherine is remembered with love, and still mentioned in conversations. For example, on Wednesday, 3/19/25, an unusually early spring thaw allowed a picture to be taken of a small garden, in front of our church. There are tiny shoots visible of a tulip arrangement that had been with Katherine in hospice! Her memory lives on in our hearts, as well as in God's creation!!

Last year, on Christmas Day, we shared the day with Katherine. She appreciated seeing the real candles on our Christmas tree. We also reminisced t o the first time she visited here. We had eaten dinner outside (summer). A wind accompanied by black clouds moved in abruptly. We scurried to clean up, and race inside just as huge raindrops pelted us. We sat, chatting, on our enclosed porch, watching tree branches swaying & twisting in the gusty winds. In the midst of roaring thunder, we heard another huge noise. CRACK! Katherine's face showed amazed shock as a large old maple tree came crashing down, missing the corner of our home by inches!!
We thanked God greatly, and a few hours later, we praised again when receiving Katherine's phone call, that she got home safely.
Now, this year, though she is still missed, we are thankful that she is Home with her Lord and Savior, no longer in pain.

Katherine & I had lost touch over the years, like many people do in life. I always though of the great times we had in high school in her Volkswagen rabbit listening & singing to Boyz II Men & the years after. Katherine was always there for me in the good & bad times. Even though she was a year younger than me she was like a big sister looking out for me and keeping me out of trouble. I will never forget the road trip from Missouri back to Oregon it was a real Thema & Louise without the crime spree. She was there when I got married & started my family. Katherine really helped me become the person I am today had I not met her, I am not sure where I would be.

Katherine’s spirit lives on in the memories we all hold dear.

Katherine was a generous and loving woman who took care of my dog once and didn't even ask for any compensation. She had a heart for animals as well as humans.

We knew Katherine as a facilitator of our NAMI support group. We had no idea she was dealing with cancer. We are so sorry to hear of her death! We appreciate her service to us. And we love this memorial photo of her.

Gone to soon. Katherine was a very special person. I will truly miss her as I hold onto the years of memories that I have. Thank you for the peonies that I will enjoy even more this year when they bloom, your laughter and wit, and your gift of friendship. You will be truly missed.
My heart felt condolences to the family and all lucky enough to have known her.

I'd like to offer my thoughts and prayers to all of Katherine's family and friends. She was a very special person and I was lucky enough to know her and work with her for several years at OHSU. I was always amazed at how smart she was. And when she chose to share it she had a great sense of humor. Katherine was truly a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.

I am a fellow resident of Enfield and also a NAMI volunteer. Although I didn't have the opportunity to meet Katherine, my NAMI NH colleagues shared with me how much of a difference she made through her volunteer efforts in supporting families in need. As a member of the NAMI NH Board of Directors, I send condolences on behalf of the whole NAMI NH family. Katharine was a true blessing to our community.
