Kathleen Cohen Obituary
Kathleen Marie Cohen, age 72, of Tewksbury Twp., NJ passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at home. She was born October 16, 1951 in Elizabeth, NJ. She grew up in Union, NJ.
She attended Saint Michael Grammar School and Union High School. Later, she attended Union College for a year followed by further education at James A Gregory School for nursing in Perth Amboy, NJ, where she received an RN diploma.
She worked for four years at Orange Memorial Hospital as a CCU nurse. She then spent the next 20 years at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ as a CCU nurse in intensive care and in various medical surgical assignments. Nursing took a toll on her body. She had to leave the profession even though she loved it.
After nursing, she pursued a career as a real estate agent with Weichert Reality in Clinton, NJ for 7 years, at which time she was diagnosed with a rare skull based tumor called a schwannoma of the 12th cranial nerve. The operation at Columbia Presbyterian left her on a feeding tube which doctors said she'd never get off of. But Kathy pursued treatment at John Hopkins and Kessler Institute and learned how to eat again.
Things went well for a few years, however they didn't get all the tumor and she needed radiation. This resolved the problem but caused tightness in her neck, causing swallowing to become difficult for her again. She was diagnosed with Parkinsons in March 2023. Between the Parkinsons and difficulty swallowing, she passed on July 30, 2024.
Memberships include St. John Newmann in Califon, NJ and the Hunterdon Garden Club.
Kathleen loved gardening. She and her husband enjoyed going on house tours together. Her love of houses led her to her career as a real estate agent. She loved both nursing and real estate dearly and excelled at both fields. Kathleen also enjoyed swimming and was an avid Mets fan.
Kathleen is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Gregory Cohen. One son; Dr. Ryan Cohen, a senior research scientist with Merck & Co. in Rahway, NJ, and his wife Ashley Denegre of Bridgewater, NJ. One daughter; Cheryl Cohen, an architect, and her husband Brandon Schans of Seattle, WA. One twin sister; Karen Portnoy and her husband Mark of Nazareth, PA. One brother; Edward Ostapczuk. Several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will take place on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 11am at St. Gertrude's Cemetery, 53 Inman Avenue, Colonia, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Kathleen's name to St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or by visiting the link https://www.stjude.org/give/memorials-and-dedications.html.

Kathy and I are first cousins, although we have not been in contact for many years. My memories of her go back to childhood when my family visited hers on an almost weekly basis as we went to see my grandmother who lived with them. Our families always got together on Christmas or other special occasions at their home.

We were not in close contact after I moved to North Carolina, although I received bits and pieces of her life through my sister who connected with her, now and then. I remember her as being quiet and shy in comparison to her sister Karen who was more outgoing.

In reading the memories of Kathy written here by her family and friends, I wish I had known her better as an adult. She seemed like an exceptional and loving person. The last time I saw her was at my father's wake, although we didn't speak for very long. She looked the same as I remembered her. In our brief conversation, I spoke of how I had always been afraid of her father who, to me, was somewhat gruff and serious. Kathy responded by saying that she was afraid of him too. We both laughed at this and for the last time I heard her laugh, which always reminded me of happy bubbles. Rest in peace, cousin.

Aunt Kathy was always a huge part in my life for as long as I can remember. Her and my mother were so close that I could find myself at her house any given weekend for some tennis, swimming in the pool, or just to casually watch the Mets. Holidays were also always a special time to get together with Aunt Kathy. My earliest memory of her was during Christmas when she bought me one of my favorite childhood Christmas gifts, a New York Giants jersey. From what I remember I was getting made fun of for liking the Giants and Aunt Kathy defended the great gift!

Later, she shared a new gift with my wife and I, her famous apple pie recipe! Now we can make her recipe every holiday moving forward.

I have so many fond memories of her throughout the different stages of my life. She was an great aunt and a fantastic person. She will be greatly missed but she'll always be apart of me and the rest of our family.

When Karen and I married, you became the sister I never had. Though we didn´t agree about everything, there was a trust and respect we shared. The relationship we had was something I treasured throughout our years together. Your kindness and sincerity were traits I admired. You were a unique individual and a great person. I´m glad I had the privilege of knowing you. I will miss you, Kathy.

Rest in peace,
Your brother Mark

I have so many fond memories of spending holidays and summers with Aunt Kathy and her family - we'd play football in the backyard, swim in the summer, and go for long walks after big holiday meals. Aunt Kathy was always laughing and loved to reminisce and share stories from her and my mom's childhood. I will miss and think about Aunt Kathy often and am sending love to her entire family.

Kathy was my best friend and twin sister. We supported and loved each other throughout our lives. I have so many fond memories, but perhaps the sweetest memory is when I told Kathy that I was finally pregnant with my first child, Katie. She was so happy for me. Kathy loved being a mom and wanted me to experience the same joys.

It is hard for me to say goodbye, but I will miss you and think of you every day.

Love your sister,

Karen

I'll always remember and cherish all the fun times as a kid swimming in Aunt Kathy's pool, playing tennis, going to the Rabbit Hole around Easter and Dorney Park in the summer; and later participating in gift swaps on Christmas and helping to prepare mashed potatoes/cinnamon buns on Thanksgiving, in which Aunt Kathy always encouraged me to follow the recipe carefully. Aunt Kathy meant so much to my family and me, and I'm thinking and praying for Uncle Greg, Ryan, and Cheryl during this very sad time.

Love,
Katie
