Kathleen M. Giacalone passed away unexpectedly on her birthday, June 16th, in Gloucester. She had been a resident of the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the last four years.
Born in Gloucester to Margaret (Lafata) and Giuseppe Giacalone of 48 Fort Square, Kathleen attended the Gloucester Public Schools and achieved her GED.
Kathleen worked at many different places throughout her life. She worked as a quality control inspector at Mighty Mac and Cyrk, and in food service at Pathways for Children and the Gloucester Preschool.
Among the students and staff at Pathways and Gloucester Preschool, Kathleen was known as "Little Kathy." Above all else, she loved the children and would love it when she was out and about and a child would shout "Little Kathy, Little Kathy" to be recognized by her.
Kathleen was a spirited member of a large family and always enjoyed gathering with family members. She always enthusiastically joined in the family celebrations of St. Joseph and was always available to help her sister, Frances. Kathleen was also particularly proud of her niece, State Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante, and never missed an opportunity to be at one of her events.
Every three weeks like clockwork, Kathleen would go with her niece Carrie to get her nails done by Christie DaSilva. She always loved showing off the various styles of nail art that she would get. She was a whiz at word search puzzles and was a huge Red Sox and Patriots Fan. In particular, she loved Gronk.
Among her activities, Kathleen was involved in the Mother of Grace Club and a regular communicant of the Holy Family Parish. She held reading the Gloucester Daily Times as a daily ritual. She also loved Paul Anka and was overjoyed when she had a chance to meet him and give him a hug.
Throughout her life, Kathleen had a love of bingo and blackjack and enjoyed playing it during her time at Seacoast. Each day at 1:45pm, Kathleen would announce to her fellow residents at Seacoast that bingo was about to begin and accompany them so everyone would be ready at the 2:00pm start time. She also enjoyed sitting in the lobby and welcoming guests to Seacoast and escorting them to their loved ones' room.
She is survived by her sister, Frances (Giacalone) Ferrante; brother, Gaspar Giacalone; sister-in-law, Grace Ann (Douponce) Giacalone; many nieces and nephews, and Connie Wong, her dear friend and roommate at Seacoast.
Kathleen was predeceased by her parents; her brother, former Gloucester City Councilor John A. Giacalone; and her brother-in-law, Joseph Ferrante.
A visitation will be held in St. Ann's Church, Holy Family Parish on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12 noon followed by a Mass celebrated at 12 noon.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
