Born on October 19, 1931, in Waltham, Massachusetts, Kathleen was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Evelyn Hughes (née Corrigan). Kathleen earned her degree as a Registered Nurse from Mt. Auburn Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1954. She was honored by her classmates as the "Cover Girl" featured in the Boston Globe's Sunday supplement on January 2, 1955. Her nursing career included positions at Winchester Hospital, The New England Rehabilitation Hospital in Woburn and the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.
Kathleen was a devoted mother to her seven children: Michael, Donald, Edward, Ann Anton, Nancy Daneau, Kathleen, and Jane.
