KATHRYN CARTER Obituary

KATHRYN TONEY CARTER Kathryn Toney Carter went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 13, 2025, at the age of 99 years and 1 day. She was born on August 12, 1926, in Tushka, Oklahoma, to John Thomas and Nora Ray Toney. Kathryn was one of nine children, all of whom preceded her in death. In 1949, Kathryn married Elton Ray Carter of Caney, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death in 1997. Together, they had three children: Paul Wayne, Philip Ray, and Michael Keith. Paul Wayne and Philip Ray, as well as her great-grandson, Thomas Wyatt Carter, preceded her in death. She married William Ernest Cannon in 2000, who also preceded her in death in 2001. A 1944 graduate of Atoka High School in Atoka, Oklahoma, Kathryn spent twelve years working at the Atoka County Treasurer's Office. While working and raising her family, Kathryn pursued higher education, graduating with honors from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1964 with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She was initiated into Delta Kappa Pi, a national honor society in education. Kathryn began her teaching career in Denison, Texas, where her husband, Elton, served as an elementary school principal. Both retired from the Denison Independent School District and spent their retirement years traveling and square dancing with the Texoma Squares. Kathryn was a master pie and sourdough bread maker and loved sharing with family and friends. In 2013, Kathryn moved to Ponte Vedra, Florida, to be near family. She was an active member of the Women's Bible Study at Ponte Vedra Presbyterian Church and attended Sunday services at Crosswater Community Church with her family. Kathryn had a lifelong love of dancing and bowling, remaining in her bowling league until the age of 94. She deeply valued her relationships and enjoyed being in the company of friends and neighbors. Above all, she cherished time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Michael, and his wife, Abigail; grandsons Sam Carter and his wife, Kelley, of Chicago; Joe Carter and his wife, Lindsey, of Jacksonville, Florida; and Jed Carter and his wife, Grace, of Yulee, Florida; grandson Michael Paul Carter of Houston, Texas; granddaughter Melissa Carter of Jacksonville, Florida; great-grandson Dominic Nunez of Jacksonville, Florida, and Gary McCown of Denison, Texas; and great-granddaughters Kathryn Carter of Jacksonville, Florida, and Taytum Carter of Houston, Texas, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express gratitude to the staff at Camellia at Deerwood and the staff at Community Hospice of Jacksonville. A Celebration of Life for Kathryn will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Crosswater Community Church, 211 Davis Park Rd., Ponte Vedra, FL. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Angels for Allison (angelsforallison.org) or Community Hospice (communityhospice.com).

I use to bowl with Kathryn at Jax Lanes. She was a beautiful person. She always made you laugh. I have often thought about her these past 5 years. May she RIP. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
