Kathryn Janice "Jan" Downing, a cherished family member, passed away on January 27, 2025, in Marietta, GA, at 82. Born on January 9, 1943, in Meridian, MS, Jan dedicated her life to serving others through her various professional and volunteer endeavors.
A retired paralegal, Jan made significant contributions as an Administrative Assistant to Judge Orinda Evans at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Her attention to detail and understanding of the law earned her respect and admiration from colleagues.
Beyond her professional career, Jan dedicated 17 years as a firefighter and EMT with the Lost Gap Volunteer Fire Department in Meridian, MS. Her bravery and dedication to this challenging role were recognized as being named Emergency Medical Responder of the Year for seven consecutive years. Jan also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Lauderdale County Emergency Responders Association, volunteered at the Home for Abused Women and Children in Meridian, MS, and as a foster parent to three children throughout the years.
Jan is survived by her daughter, Karen Keith (Barry) Burke, of Dallas, GA, and her beloved granddaughter, Kathryn Liberty Burke, also of Dallas, GA. She is also mourned by her brother Richard (Marcia) Carroll of Meridian, MS, sister Patricia (Franklin) Hamilton of Meridian, MS, and many nieces and nephews.
Her father, Randolph Carroll, and her mother, Catherine (Courtney) Carroll of Meridian, MS, preceded her in death.
Her life will be celebrated during a visitation on February 4, 2025, from Noon to 2:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM at West Cobb Funeral Home & Crematory, located at 2480 Macland Road, Marietta, GA 30064—Pastor Jim Chidester of Calvary Baptist Church, Acworth, GA, officiating.
Jan's legacy of service, kindness, and commitment to community will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be remembered for her extraordinary spirit and the love she shared with her family and friends.
