Kathryn Meyer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wallin-Stucky Funeral Home - Oak Harbor on Jan. 9, 2026.
Kathryn "Kathy" Louise (Coates) Meyer, 79, passed peacefully at her home in Coupeville, WA January 5, 2026, following a courageous nearly four-year battle against cancer. She was surrounded by those she loved most - her devoted husband, her children, and their spouses.
Kathy was born and raised in Coupeville as the fifth and youngest child of Mary and Richard Coates.
Kathy was popular in school; she graduated from Coupeville High with honors in 1964. She attended Washington State University and Western Washington University. She later earned her associate degree in accounting at Everett Community College.
Kathy met David, a Navy serviceman, and were wed in 1967. Together they gave birth to son David in 1968 and daughter Jennifer in 1969. She lovingly raised her family in Everett and Bothell Washington before moving back to Coupeville in retirement.
As a young mother of two, she devoted herself to creating a loving home. She later built a successful career in accounting at Safeco and Symetra, retiring in 2007.
Kathy took an interest in all things family. She organized annual family reunions for the great number of Sherman and Coates relatives, carefully preserved family histories, and joyfully hosted countless gatherings for friends and family alike.
Kathy was a wonderful singer. Though she didn't sing publicly, those that knew her well often remarked about her amazing voice. Kathy was kind, caring and welcoming, had a great sense of humor and a wonderful, infectious laugh.
A talented quilter, Kathy created treasured quilts for many family members, continuing her craft even in her final years - most recently making Christmas stockings for loved ones in 2023 and 2024. She was also a dedicated member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 25 years, forming lifelong friendships along the way.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her father Richard Coates (1948), mother Mary (Sherman) Coates (1996), sister Carol Looke (1964), sister Sylvia Grasser (2021) and sister Gladys Snyder (2023). She is survived and forever loved by husband David J Meyer, son and daughter-in-law David and Deidre Meyer, daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and John Imel, and brother and sister-in-law Vern and Patty Coates. Kathryn will also be forever missed by her six grandchildren: John Meyer, Jessica Flores (Jason), Michaela Meyer (Braedon Cothren), Joshua Imel, Jarod Imel and Ryan Meyer.
A graveside service will take place on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 1:30pm at Sunnyside Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will take place immediately following the graveside service.
