Kathryn (Smith) O'Neill, 85, of Wainscott, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at Lahey Hospital, in Burlington, MA.
Kitty was born on February 9, 1939, in Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan, Ireland, to the late Patrick and Delia Smith. She was raised on the family farm in Killavalley, and later immigrated to New York City at the age of 15. She worked as a nanny for the loving Block family between Manhattan and the Hamptons and while Kitty knew this job would not last forever, she maintained a wonderful friendship with the family her entire life. She later began her second career at ERB (Educational Records Bureau), where she assisted families with their children's educational needs and school selections.
Kitty met her late husband Tommy at a wedding in New York and married in 1963. They shared 57 devoted and loving years of marriage together. In the early seventies, Kitty and Tommy purchased land in Wainscott, Long Island and built their forever home, enjoying their weekends in the Hamptons until retirement. While it was their sanctuary, Kitty missed the city life and they subsequently bought an apartment in Woodside, Queens where they enjoyed the best of both worlds.
She will always be remembered for her unconditional love and care for others-once you met Kitty, she became a friend for life.
She is survived by her son Peter O'Neill and his wife Jessica of Windham, NH; her granddaughters Elizabeth, and fiancé Brendan McInnis, Julia and fiancé, Ryan Kenney, Hannah, and Deliah; her sister Nancy Gaffney; her brothers Seamus Smith and Matty Smith; her brother-in-law Frank Sutton and Patsy Gaffney; her sister-in-law Patricia Smith, son-in-law Daniel Hart; and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews both in Ireland and the United States.
In addition to her parents and husband, Kitty is predeceased by her cherished daughter Patricia O'Neill-Hart; her siblings Bartley, Patsy, Bridie, Susie, and Eileen; her sisters-in-law Nuala and Carmel; her brother-in-law Jimmy Browne, and her nephews Kieran and James.
A Funeral Mass, where all are welcome, will be held on December 14, 2024, at 1pm, at Most Holy Trinity Parish, 79 Buell Lane, East Hampton, NY 11937. Interment will follow at Wainscott Cemetery, 51 Wainscott Main Street Wainscott, NY 11975.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kitty's loving memory to the Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society of America www.nsasa.org or Alzheimer's Association www.alz.org
