Kathy "Kat" Daniels has been my friend since our childhood in DeGrasse, NY. After graduating from Knox Memorial Central School in Russell, we seldom saw each other until I moved back to the North Country in 2012. We rekindled our friendship during a summer job in Cranberry Lake; and a couple years later, we took a road trip to Texas to spend some time with her brother Chuck in Houston. It was also a chance to visit my sister who was living there, outside the metropolitan area. By taking our time and taking turns driving, we were able to visit a number of interesting cities and sites along the way Southwest and on our way back North. Our overnight stops seemed more like the Pajama Parties we'd had as kids... and I'm thankful that the trip allowed us the opportunity to forge an even-stronger friendship. More recently, the day Kat died, I had driven past her house and felt a particular desire to stop and visit her because she had become quite ill... but I was running behind for a doctor appointment in Watertown. So instead, I just tooted the horn and promised myself I would drive the same route home and stop in. Sadly, as it turned out, my return trip was altered by another appointment and I didn't find out until the next day that Kat had not been home, but had been lingering under the care of Hospice and had just passed away. I wish we could tell when our Sixth Sense kicks in and tells us something is very wrong and that we should stop and address it immediately... but the logical mind too often tells us we're being overly-concerned -- "silly" even -- and to keep on moving in the direction we were already headed. All I can say to my friend Kathy Daniels now is "I love you, and I'm sorry I wasn't there to say Goodbye. I'll try to learn to listen more carefully!"
