Kathy Jean Powell

Kathy Jean Powell, age 67, resident of Mounds, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 2, 2024, in Mounds, Oklahoma. She was born on May 1, 1957, in Hominy, Oklahoma to Robert Wallace and Hazel Aline (Gillium) Shoemaker. Kathy's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and dedication to her family.

Kathy's early years were spent in the Osage school in Osage, where she laid the foundation for her future endeavors. Her career as a medical coding specialist spanned 14 years at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she was known for her meticulous work and compassionate nature.

Family was the cornerstone of Kathy's world. She is survived by a loving and extensive family, including her brother, Dennis Shoemaker and his wife Norma; her sisters, Sherry McCubbin and her husband Fred, Linda Dickson, and Marsha Kozak and her husband David. Kathy's legacy continues through her children, Michelle Chadwick and her husband William, Tabitha Clark and her husband Jason, and Frank Powell and his wife Christina. Her life was further enriched by the joy of her 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will carry forward her memory with love.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Wallace and Hazel Aline Shoemaker; her beloved husband, Stanley Mitchell Fanning; and her brother-in-law, Jim Dickson.

Kathy's life was one of creativity and passion. She found solace and expression in making baby blankets and quilting, crafting each piece with care and affection. Her artistic talents also shone through in her jewelry and beaded gems, which were not only beautiful but also a testament to her meticulous attention to detail. Kathy's adventurous spirit was evident in her love for the gun range, where she shared her enthusiasm for shooting with her children and grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured forever.

Traveling was another of Kathy's pleasures, with Eureka Springs, Arkansas, holding a special place in her heart. It was there that she and her late husband, Stanley Mitchell Fanning, shared moments of exploration and relaxation. Kathy's zest for life was contagious, and her love for Christmas was unparalleled. Her home became a winter wonderland each year, with a tree so lavishly adorned with gifts that it had to be downsized. The tradition of making Christmas cookies with her grandchildren was one of the many ways she spread joy and love during her favorite holiday.

Kathy's warmth, intelligence, and humor were the pillars of her character. She was a woman who moved through life with grace, always ready to lend a hand or share a smile. Her presence was a gift to those around her, and her absence will be deeply felt.

Visitation for Kathy will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, November 11, 2024, at Brown Funeral Home in Coweta, Oklahoma. Services celebrating her life will take place at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Coweta, Oklahoma. Kathy will be laid to rest at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
