Oak Ridge – Ms. Kathy Berryman Shaulis, age 77, passed away, July 25, 2025, at Methodist Medical Center, after a prolonged illness.
Up until the very end, Kathy maintained her kindness and her overwhelming love for her family. She always had a genuine smile and friendly words for everyone she encountered on a daily basis. Kathy spent her early years in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, with her family. Blowing Rock would always remain special in her heart and she would frequently return there for the rest of her life. The family then moved to Kingsport, Tennessee, where she, along with her brother and two sisters, were raised by her loving parents.
She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School before attending one year at Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia. She then transferred to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education and became an avid Vol fan for her entire life. Before her last semester of college, Kathy married John Shaulis. John was enlisted in the United States Navy and they spent their first years of marriage at John's stations in Key West, Florida, and Virginia Beach, Virginia.
After John's time in the service, they moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where their daughter, Julie, was born. They moved to Dallas, Texas, for several years. In 1987, Kathy and her daughter returned to East Tennessee, and she made Oak Ridge her permanent home. In Oak Ridge, Kathy went to work for Eberline Analytical for over 30 years and fell in love with the Oak Ridge community and history. Kathy had a fierce love for her family and leaves a huge void in their lives.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Berryman, Jr. and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Proctor Lyon.
She is survived by her daughter, Julie Anna Hickey (Ryan) and grandsons Jack Lyon Nemeth and Jacob Ryan Hickey, all of Knoxville, Tennessee; brother Clarence Berryman, III (Mary) of Lakeland, Florida; sisters Mary Patricia Hendrick of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Marguerite Lyon Dyer (Jim) of Knoxville, Tennessee, and several nieces and nephews and one special grandnephew.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of the Alexander Guest House for the wonderful care they provided.
A graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, on August 2, 2025, at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mission of Hope in Knoxville, Tennessee.
