Kathy Thorstad Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fairbanks Funeral Home & Crematory on Jun. 7, 2024.
Kathy Arlene Morris Thorstad was born May 27th, 1960, while her parents were stationed in France. They were stationed back to the United States when Kathy was 6 months old. Her family moved around a lot while in the Air Force.
Kathy was the light of any party, and she sure knew how to turn any frown upside down either from making you laugh or giving the best words of wisdom. She loved to garden, watching her favorite coke cherry tree come into bloom every year for her birthday. And man, could she cook. "No one better leave hungry!" She would say. Kathy was also known as one of the neighborhood moms. Spent countless hours at little league and soccer games as she cheered her children on. Kathy could be found hanging out with her best friend Michelle, who become part of the family in 1994. Those two were Inseparable and were always up to something. You could always expect to hear lots of laughing when they were together. Kathy's pride and joy were her husband Joel, her four very strong spirited kids and her five beautiful grandchildren. She talked about each and every one of them with such light and sparkle in her eyes. She was a proud wife and mother. Kathy was the essence of elegance and class. Kathy spent her summers down at their family cabin and winters often would be trips to Arizona.
Kathy went to be with her mom and mad in Heaven on June 4th, 2024. She is survived by her Husband "Mr. Wonderful" Joel Thorstad their four children, Randal Scott and wife Karla, Teddy Owen and his two children Ryleigh and Carson, Desiree Jolene and her two children Hazelle and Grace, Carol Sue and husband David and their daughter Sophie. If you would like to help the family with unexpected loss our family has faced, they have set up a GoFundMe in Joel Thorstad name.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, June 12th at 5-7 pm, at Fairbanks Funeral Home in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Rest in peace, Kat. To Kat´s family: I can´t imagine the pain you are feeling at Kat´s sudden passing. I knew Kat through our work at the Alaska Department of Labor, and she definitely brought much light into our lives there. What a tragic loss of a very bright light. Many condolences to all of you.

Kathy and I were first cousins. Growing up was so much fun when they came home to visit. It really made holidays awesome. Summer months we would go from our house, to Grandma Morris to Aunt Agnes. We always took the short cut down the RailRoad tracks. Oakland City Indiana was always home. Easters were the best. There are so many memories . She will be missed and forever loved .

Condolences to Joel, his children and grandchildren. Kathy's parents purchased my parent's house on Coppet street in Fairbanks. I went to school with Tracy and her brother Tim. I met all of the Morris family. Doug, Rebecca, Kathy, Tracy and Tim.

I used to babysit Scott and Ted. Kathy would often be up late as she had insomnia also. We would laugh and joke on FB about our kids when they were little. I will miss her smile. Also, her cooking recipes. You will be missed friend but, we know that bright star at night is you watching over everyone you love.

I was sad to find this announcement today. Although my friendship with Kathy over the last 15 years was only through Facebook, I remember her friendly personality in high school. I admired her cheesemaking skills and had hoped to return to Alaska to take her up on the offer to teach me in person. Over the years, I enjoyed her stories about her visits to the cabin, Arizona, Mr. Wonderful, and her family. Deepest condolences to the family - I know she will be missed.

I was very sad to find this announcement today. Although my connection with Kathy over the last 15 years has been through Facebook, I remember her friendly personality in high school and have enjoyed getting to know her over the years. I loved following her cheese-making posts and hoped to get back up to Alaska to take her up on her offer to teach me. It was obvious that she was enjoying life through her posts of her time at the cabin, Arizona, Mr. Wonderful, and her family. Deepest condolences to the family.

So sorry for your loss, she was indeed a wonderful woman. I have many wonderful childhood memories of her and my mother playing Scrabble for house and there was usually a large meal involved. We will be praying for strength for your family in this time of grief.
