Kay Lamar McEllhenney, known to many as "Mac", 89, of Akron, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Lancaster General Hospital - Penn Medicine, after an extended illness.
He was born in Akron to the late Clair McEllhenney, Sr. and Luella (Wolf) McEllhenney and was the husband of Christine (Damaska) McEllhenney.
He was a member and Extraordinary Minister of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ephrata. During his working years, Mac was the owner of McEllhenney Homes, building homes in Akron and other areas in and around Lancaster. He designed and built the pavilion in Akron Park and donated a kitchen to the Akron Rec Center. Mac was a charter member of the Akron Hunting Club and a member of the Akron Lions Club for over 38 years, where he was in charge of the "secret sauce" for spaghetti dinners. During his time in the Lions, Mac won two Melvin Jones Awards, the highest honor given by the Lions, for significant contributions to service. Mac was an avid Penn State fan and enjoyed watching old western movies.
In addition to his wife, Mac is survived by four daughters, Trudy, wife of James Simmons, Vicki Zulick, Coleen, wife of Craig Pike, Anna Marie, wife of Richard Mariano; a son, Richard Caschera, Jr., husband of Susan Caschera; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a brother, Coburn McEllhenney; two sisters, Joyce, wife of Cliff Brown, Barbara, wife of Robert Gast and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Donna Johnson and Eileen Martin.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 10 to 11 AM, at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, 320 Church Avenue, Ephrata, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, at 11 AM, with Fr. Ed Faliskie, C.Ss.R. as Celebrant. Final Commendation and Farewell will take place in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mac's memory may be made to Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic School 320 Church Ave., Ephrata, PA 17522, or Akron Lions Club, PO Box 64 Akron, PA 17501.
