Kay Darnell Neff, 78, of Southern Pines, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2024, at FirstHealth Hospice House in West End.
A native of Moore County, she was loved by her family, friends, and community. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Kay was salutatorian of Farm Life High School's graduating class of 1964 and played basketball for Farm Life. She then attended Selena Commercial College in Lumberton and Sanford Business College. She worked as an office manager for a local dental practice in Southern Pines for 52 years. Kay was a longtime, faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and served in her church in many different capacities, such as historian, teaching VBS, and directing many Christmas plays. She was also the historian for the Sandhills Baptist Association. She was creative and loved arranging flowers, decorating, and spending time with her family. Kay had a love of genealogy and was a member of the Alfred Moore Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Kay was the daughter of the late Alvis Eugene Darnell and Martha Pearl Moore Darnell. She is preceded in death by her sister, Linda Moore Darnell of Fontana, California.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charles Richard Neff Jr. of Southern Pines; her daughter, Ashley Neff Adams of Jamestown (fiancé, Barry Stuart of Stoneville); grandchildren: Wayne "Thomas" Adams IV of Raleigh and Rebecca Ellison Adams of Jamestown, and brother, Jerry Wayne Darnell (wife, Pamela) of Seagrove.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, which would have been Kay's 79th birthday, from 6-8 p.m. at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage. The funeral service will be Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Southern Pines. Burial will follow at Yates Thagard Cemetery in Carthage.
The family requests donations be made to either Pleasant Hill Baptist Church or FirstHealth Hospice.
