Kayoshi Masuoka Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Feb. 16, 2026.
Dr. Kayoshi Masuoka, age 98, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2026. He was born in 1928 in Long Beach, California to Nashitaro and Kazu Masuoka. He moved to Ohio in 1945 after spending his high school years incarcerated at Heart Mountain Concentration Camp in Wyoming along with his family. He graduated from the Ohio State University in 1948 with a degree in pharmacy. After serving two years in the Army, he returned to OSU and graduated with a medical degree in 1958. He opened a solo practice in family medicine in Chardon in 1962, becoming a beloved community doctor for several decades until his retirement in 1988.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Wilmot Masuoka, sons Jim (Liz) and Fred (Kari) and daughter Tami, and four grandchildren: Joshua (Kelsey), Maggie (Dylan), Jonathan, and Sarah (Jacob).

Throughout his life, he enjoyed golfing, skiing, gardening, and was a lifelong student, always striving to learn more about the world. Lovingly known as Grampy, his grandchildren were his greatest joy.

Always humble, he requested no funeral and no disruption of the time and resources of the living.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation, 1539 Road 19, Powell, WY 82435 https://www.heartmountain.org/donate/ or the Geauga Dog Shelter, 12513 Merritt Rd, Chardon, OH 44024.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Original Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.burrservice.com.

My mother, Tomi Andow (nee Akiya) who is currently 98 years old, graduated high school with Kayoshi at Heart Mountain and she remembers that both were senior class officers. Mom settled in Chesterland after leaving camp and Kayoshi treated her for a minor ailment and not until much later realized their connection. She is happy to hear of Kayoshi´s long and full life (another thing they have in common) and sends her deepest condolences to friends and family.

Dear Mary and family: Joe and I send much love and our condolences. I remember sitting next to you, Mary in Chardon High School chorus and you were a lot of fun. I remember that you and Dr. Masuoka delivered one of our daughters. I remember the Dr. doing his rounds in the evening and when I was told that you two were dating and engaged, I thought it was so sweet that he was probably waiting for you to get off work. He was a great doctor and a really good man. We hope your memories sustain you and will always bring you joy.
