Keith was born on March 28, 1931, in Bradgate, IA, he was the son of Charles and Hattie (Cook) Chapman.
Keith grew up in Rolfe where he graduated from high school in 1949 and then worked in the area until 1952 when he was drafted into the army. Returning from his military stint in Germany, he enrolled at Buena Vista College the Fall of 1954 and graduated in 1958.
On June 16th, 1957, he and Shirley Michaelsen were married at the Methodist Church in Holstein, IA. They resided and worked in Storm Lake until moving to Harris, IA in the fall of 1958 where his coaching/teaching career began at Harris High School.
Keith attended summer sessions at Westmar, University of Iowa and Colorado State College at Greeley, CO where he received his MA degree in 1962. That Fall they moved to Glidden, IA where he was employed by the Glidden-Ralston school until his retirement in 1992. Over the years there, he held many coaching positions and taught physical education, drivers training and social studies.
Keith enjoyed sports, whether on the court, the diamond, the gridiron or the golf links plus much hunting, fishing and trapping in his younger years. In the early years of his basketball coaching career, he was chosen to receive the coveted “Buena Vista Coach of the Year” award of which he was very proud. He really enjoyed the game of golf throughout his lifetime and especially in his retirement years. He was fortunate to card three holes-in-one. Most importantly, Keith was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan!
Keith was very proud of the individual achievements of his sons and his grandchildren not only in athletics but also, academics. During his retirement years, he was especially thrilled to see his grandson, Nolan, be awarded the MVP of the state basketball championship game in 2015 and to be named to the all-state first team as well. A couple years later, granddaughter, Kayla, helped Treynor win the girl’s state championship in basketball and was named to the all-state first team as well. How thrilling it was for a former coach, a man who absolutely loved the game (and his grandchildren)!
Keith and Shirley purchased their retirement home in Carroll in 2005 where they have resided ever since. During early retirement years they enjoyed spending several Winter months in Texas.
Keith has been a member of the American Legion at sites in Rolfe, Glidden, Holstein and Carroll for 62 years.
Keith is survived by his wife Shirley, three sons, Michael of Glidden, William of Seattle, WA, and Steve (Gina) of Treynor IA and two grandchildren, Nolan (Rylee) of Urbandale and Kayla of Treynor IA.
Keith was preceded in death by his parents, sister Leone (Paul Hudek) his brothers Herschel (Evelyn) and Roger (Dorothy) an infant sister, Iola; and his parents-in-law Wilbert and Corrine Michaelsen.
May the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series and may he rest in peace.
