John Leachman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Dunn’s Funeral Home on Mar. 10, 2026.
John Leachman passed peacefully from this life Friday, March 6, 2026, at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines. He was 93. Iles Funeral Home will oversee funeral services. Information may be found at Ilesfuneralhomes.com.

John was born December 23, 1932, in Des Moines, the son of Robert C. and Margaret Leachman. He attended Roosevelt High School and then studied business at the University of Iowa where he joined the Sigma Nu fraternity and met his future wife and best friend, Prudence Meder Leachman. John left his studies to serve his country during the Korean War. He returned home to marry Prudy, join the family business and start his family. He and Prudy were blessed with four children, Sarah, Jack, Jennifer and James.

John retired as CEO of Leachman Lumber in 2006 and Chair Emeritus in 2025. He stopped by almost daily for many, many years. He was a longstanding member of the Des Moines business community, the Des Moines/Embassy Clubs, the Des Moines Breakfast Club LTD., and the Northwest Lumber Association (now BLD Connection).

John enjoyed his home in Clayton, Iowa, boating the Mississippi River, mushroom hunting, fishing, and supporting Iowa Hawkeye Sports. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family and his countless friends. He possessed an uncanny ability to make even his newest acquaintances feel as welcomed as his oldest of friends. He generously shared the warmest hugs.

John is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Sarah Schori, John (Jack) Leachman Jr. (Dawn Jorgensen) and Jennifer Leachman, all of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Tyler (Courtney) Schori and Allison (Derrick) Kuehner, Neal and Adam Jaycox; his great grandchildren, Grant and Holden Schori, Parker Kuehner. He is preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, his wife and his son-in-law, Michael Schori, and son, James.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Pheasants Forever.

Online condolences are welcomed at www.ilescares.com
