Christopher Mefferd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Westover Chapel on Mar. 4, 2026.
Christopher Pierce Mefferd, 78, of Des Moines, passed away March 2, 2026, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, surrounded by his family.

Chris served God, his family, community, and country as a beloved husband, father, grandfather "Bopp," great-grandfather, entrepreneur, craftsman, Bible teacher, church youth leader, military police officer, and security officer.

Chris grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University.

His career as a craftsman and business owner began when he worked alongside his father at J.B. Mefferd Co., where they designed and built custom countertops and cabinets throughout the Des Moines area. After his father retired, Chris took over the family business, operating it as Mefferd Cabinets-Counters Plus in Urbandale. He later founded Centurion Security Services, providing physical security for local businesses, and before his retirement, served at Camp Dodge as a security officer.

In 1970, Chris joined the Iowa National Guard's 186th Military Police Company and served for more than 20 years before retiring in 1992 at the rank of Sergeant First Class.

Above all else, Chris cherished time spent with his wife and family. A devoted husband of 55 years, he loved to volunteer and actively participate in his children's activities. He had a deep affection for dogs, and especially the family's beloved pet, Irish. An avid craftsman at heart, he enjoyed tackling home projects and spending time in his woodworking shop. Chris had a lifelong passion for technology - whether tinkering with electronics, radios, or computers. His love of aviation dated back to his youth, when he pursued a private pilot's license, and he carried a particular fascination with the P-38 Lightning fighter plane, a passion he kept alive through flight simulators at home. He was also a skilled marksman who enjoyed deer hunting.

Chris accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior on January 5, 1981. He served God faithfully on this earth for 45 years and now enjoys eternity with his Savior.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James B. and Jane Mefferd.

Chris is survived by his wife, Elaine Mefferd; his children, Scott Mefferd (Merie), Kim Elmore (Aaron), and Michelle Wiedmann (Ed); his grandchildren, Shad Kobylasz (Cheyenne), Mariah and Cassadie Mefferd, and Ben, Hudson, and Gianna Wiedmann; his great-grandchildren, Kyren and Asher Kobylasz; his brother, Jim Mefferd (Marti); nephew, Michael Mefferd (Bekki) and niece, Mary Mefferd.

Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm with the Celebration of Life to follow at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Gifts of the Spirit Ministries, 10520 New York Ave., Urbandale, IA 50322.

The inurnment ceremony with military honors will take place on Monday, March 23, at 9:30 a.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Adel, IA 50003.
