Richard Mefferd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Daniels Chapel of the Roses Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. - Santa Rosa on Feb. 27, 2026.
Richard Junior Mefferd, born on March 21,1933 in El Monte, California, passed away at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jane Paula, after 58 years of marriage, in 2024.

A devoted Christian, husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend, he lived a life defined by faith, service, humor, and love for family. He proudly served 22 years in the United States Army, including service in Korea and Vietnam, and later retired from a second career with the Department of Corrections. He was a hardworking provider who never stopped caring for those he loved.

He never met a stranger, enjoyed a good joke (even if you'd heard it before), and was always ready to talk about the Raiders and the possibilities of "next year." At home, he showed his love in quiet ways, faithfully caring for his family. In his final days, when asked what he needed, he simply pointed to the word "family."

He is survived by his son, John (Judy); his daughter, Julie; his grandchildren, Gunner (Katie), Jaenna, and Jillian; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, June and Don, and Don and Linda; as well as many extended family members and friends.

He was a loud, proud, unforgettable Papa. He wasn't shy with the car horn in the school pickup line if things were moving too slowly. He brought an air horn to games to celebrate big plays-even if it risked getting him kicked out. His grandchildren never had to wonder whether he was proud of them. They knew.

A service will be held on March 8, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Daniel's Chapel of the Roses in Santa Rosa. A reception will follow. The family will have a private burial in the spring.

His favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Through Christ's strength, he did many hard and faithful things. His life also reflects the words of 2 Timothy 4:7: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

He will be deeply missed and forever loved. His legacy of bold love, quiet service, faithful devotion, and unwavering commitment to family will continue through all who were blessed to know him.
