Keith T. Goldstein M.D., age 66, of Raritan Township, NJ, passed away Friday, July 14, 2023, at Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Norman and Elinor Goldstein, Keith resided in West Islip and Manhattan, NY, before moving to Raritan Township in 1989.
A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, Keith completed his residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City, serving as chief resident and completing his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
In his career he served for over thirty years as physician and director of the ICU and Pulmonary and Critical Care Services at Hunterdon Medical Center, later joining RWJBarnabas at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset and in Warren, New Jersey. For many years he served as assistant professor of medicine at Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, New Brunswick, NJ. All throughout he was known for his collegiality, gaining fulfillment from sharing his knowledge to motivate and inspire the next generation of physicians.
He loved people and dedicated his life to healing patients, who gave as much back to him as he gave to them. He thrived on problem-solving and challenging cases, a life-long student of medicine who immersed himself in the latest research - a stack of journals perpetually on his nightstand.
His passion for medicine was only exceeded by his love for his family. Keith was an extremely dedicated father, grandfather, and husband and despite how busy he was, his heart was always with them.
He loved the natural beauty of Sarasota, Florida and spending time there with his family. Later in life, he found joy in watching and studying birds, sharing his latest knowledge with his granddaughter.
His lifelong devotion to sports and fitness began with sandlot baseball in his Long Island neighborhood, continued through his record bench press in the MIT weightlifting championship, and even endured through his hospitalizations, when he never stopped exercising, doing his daily push-ups on the side of his hospital bed.
In addition to his parents, Keith was predeceased by his brother Scott in 1997 and brother Tracy in 2013.
Surviving are his loving wife of fourteen years, Susan Goldstein, his daughter and son-in-law Elena Goldstein Lake and Michael Lake, his daughters Avia Goldstein and Dayna Goldstein, his granddaughter Valley Lake, his former wife Eileen Rafferty, his sisters-in-law Cathy Goldstein and Sonya Goldstein, and nieces and nephews Tara, Andrew, Jay, Tye, and Kyle.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, July 17, 2023, in New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon, NY under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home. A visitation will be held at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.
In recognition of his unfailing intensity and enthusiasm for life even while living with blood cancer, and in gratitude for the life-sustaining gifts Keith received, the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry, https://www.giftoflife.org, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, https://tinyurl.com/45dpmkhd or the Mount Sinai Health System, https://giving.mountsinai.org/.

It´s hard to say goodbye to Keith. He was a friend and colleague, and one of the most extraordinary physicians I have known. He was strong, compassionate, and he was passionate about the practice of medicine. His medical knowledge was encyclopedic. If I asked Keith a medical question, his answer would be brilliant, concise, and it frequently included references in medical journals which he somehow had neatly filed in that encyclopedic mind of his. More recently I was one of his patients. He was a brilliant diagnostician, and he embodied everything that medicine is supposed to be. Keith will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.
