Kenneth Walter Boerma, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 8, 2024, in Grand Haven, Michigan. He was born in 1931, to Walter and Ella (Schmidt) Boerma in Grand Haven, Michigan.
After graduating from high school, Ken worked at Bastian Blessing and then Atco Flex, from where he retired. He was a proud Vet and honorably served his country for four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post 28 for over 50 years.
Ken loved hunting, fishing, playing cards with friends, and SPORTS! – from watching his sons and grandchildren in various sports to being an avid fan of the Wolverines, Lions and Tigers. He also loved traveling and adventures as evidenced by visiting all 50 states at least once. He also took many cruises, bus and train trips. Ken would carry on a conversation with anyone and made many friends during his travels.
He was involved in Boy Scouting for 60-plus years, starting as a cub scout through many years as a troop leader. Ken was a faithful and lifetime member of St. Mary's Church in Spring Lake, where he served as an usher for many years and was involved with various activities and committees, but Ken would say his greatest accomplishment was his family. He was a loving father of four, grandfather of nine and great-grandfather of 15, and will be dearly missed.
Ken is survived by his children: Linda Traynor, Bradley (Romaine) Boerma and Roger (Leslie) Boerma; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Donna (Schuiteman) Boerma; and second wife, Barbara (Wallace) Boerma; son, Michael Boerma; and brother, Marvin Boerma.
Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2024, at St. Mary's Catholic Church (406 E. Savidge St., Spring Lake, MI 49456) and Visitation with the family one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to Harbor Hospice or St. Mary's Catholic School.
