Kenneth W. Claxton (Kent), 90, formerly of Yulee, passed away at his home in Hortense, GA, on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
He was born in Jacksonville and was a son of the late James B. "Tom" and Sadie Wilson Claxton.
Kenneth (Kent) was a lifelong hard worker. For many years, he operated his own logging business in and around Yulee, and it was often said that he kept the mills in Fernandina Beach running with the timber he brought in. After retirement, he never slowed down-he spent his days improving his land in Hortense, tending to his cattle, and staying busy from sunup to sundown. He often said he loved to work, and his drive and dedication were at the heart of who he was.
His property became a true showcase-every fence, barn, and pasture shaped by his hands and his vision. Beyond work, one of his greatest joys was coon hunting, where he earned awards and shared stories that always brought a smile.
He loved his family deeply and showed it in countless ways. He shared an unbreakable friendship with his son, Kenneth E. Claxton-they were more than father and son, they were the best of friends. He adored his grandchildren Melissa and K.C.
In addition to his parents, Kent was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruby in 2001, his daughter Millie in 2008, and seven siblings.
He leaves behind his son, Kenneth E. Claxton of Hortense; his grandchildren, Melissa Claxton of Yulee and K. C. Claxton of Hortense; his longtime companion, Patricia Kelly of Hortense; a sister, Dorothy Bloodsworth of Maitland, FL; and his great-grandchildren, Mallory Brown, Colt Claxton, Wilson Brown, Wrangler Claxton, and Hunter Claxton-as well as many nieces, nephews, and others who loved and admired him.
Funeral services for Mr. Claxton will be held Thursday, April 24, 2025, beginning at 1:00 PM in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors with Rev. Jim Tippins officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 PM.
He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Hughes Cemetery.
