Kenneth Francis Gorman, 75, of Durham NC, died unexpectedly on the morning of Thursday July 18th, 2024 . Born in Cambridge, MA on August 26th, 1948 to Gloria and Francis Gorman (deceased), Ken attended Notre Dame de Pitie followed by secondary school at Cambridge Matignon. He was a proud 1970 Boston College alumnus with a B.A. in Marketing, and he continued to follow their athletics for decades to come. After graduating however, Ken’s career pivoted into IT when he discovered he had a natural talent for thinking in systems. Working in IT introduced him to his wife, Catherine Flanagan Gorman, who he married on April 27th, 1986. Together they had one daughter, Kristen Gorman, born February 24th, 1989.
Ken’s love of multi-pronged problem solving was a thread that ran through many aspects of his life, from his appreciation for learning about his daughter’s research, to his work at the MA Automobile Insurance Bureau, where he oversaw the IT department for 14 years. He even looked at golf, one of his favorite hobbies, through the lenses of athleticism, materials, and geometry. But it was in 2009, when like millions of otherAmericans Ken found himself between jobs, his resourcefulness, generosity, and inability to rest on his laurels truly shone. He committed to short-term contract jobs, volunteered at South Shore Hospital, took care of ill family members who needed transportation, and even learned to grow vegetables all while searching for something that could utilize his full skillset. Fortunately, he found a home with Health Management Associates, Inc, in an environment he fondly described as the friendliest and most intellectually stimulating place he ever worked. This was his final job before moving to North Carolina to a relaxing retirement filled with travel to national parks and on tropical cruises.
Ken is survived by his wife of 38 years, Catherine Gorman, daughter, Kristen Gorman, mother, Gloria Gorman, sister Karen Gorman, brothers and sisters-in-law James and Paula Flanagan and Paul and Jan Flanagan, as well as 5 nieces. Services will be held at Pyne Keohane Funeral and Cremation 21 Emerald St. in Hingham, MA on July 30th . Visitation will be from 10AM – 12PM with a memorial service to follow.
