James Muldoon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Evoy-Banasz Funeral Home on Mar. 16, 2026.
James Michael Muldoon, an emeritus professor of history at Rutgers University at Camden, invited Research Scholar in Residence at the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University and Cambridge Rhodes Scholar, died in Voorhees, NJ, March 12, 2026, a few weeks prior to his 91st birthday. He was born to Catherine, nee Hurley, and Robert Muldoon in Somerville, MA and lived a great portion of his life in the New England area as well as South Jersey.

James received his undergraduate degree from Iona University, a master's degree from Boston College and earned a Doctorate Degree in History from Cornell University. He researched and extensively published throughout the years and was known well, particularly regarding medieval history, the Church and religions of the time. He wrote about spiritual conquest, and the conquest of the Americas post medieval time as well as the developing world order. His appetite for knowledge never waned, and he stayed well informed throughout his life.

A faith filled man, proud of his Irish heritage, he had once considered the priesthood. It was not to be, but he remained passionate about the study of canon law and church history. He was fascinated by the shores of New England and shipbuilding; something that became a hobby, building model ships. He found great joy and delight in his family with always a special spark of interest for his grandchildren and new great grandson.

James was predeceased by his first wife Teresa in 1985 and his second wife, Judith Fitzpatrick in 2016. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret "Maggie" (Dean) DelSignore of Haddon Heights and son, Robert (Charlie) Muldoon of Dauphin Island, AL; grandchildren: Michael (Heather) DelSignore, Matthew DelSignore, Monica (Sean) Dow, Mark DelSignore and Mia DelSignore; and one great grandson, Oliver Dow. He also leaves his sister, Mary Muldoon; brother, John (the late Hallie and the late Peg) Muldoon; nieces, Jessica and Amy and nephews, Andrew and Timothy. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert (the late Barbara) Muldoon and his niece Catherine.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Friday, March 20, 2026, 9:30–10:45a.m. at St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church, Fourth Avenue and Kings Highway Haddon Heights, NJ where a Mass of Resurrection will follow 11:00a.m. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill, NJ. Memorial donations may be made to: St. Mary's Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, 210 St. Mary's Drive, Cherry Hill NJ 08003.
