Kenneth Peter Hutnick

Kenneth Peter Hutnick was born on January 6, 1933, in Camden, New Jersey, and grew up in Maple Shade, attending Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He graduated from St. Joseph University in 1955 with a B.S. in Chemistry. After graduation, he entered the United States Air Force in October of 1955.

In December of 1956, Ken married Frances Doyle of Cheltenham, Pennsylvania. They were married for 46 years until her passing in 2002. Ken had many assignments over his 20-plus year career, including two combat tours during the Vietnam War. His final assignment was to Robins Air Force Base, where he retired in December of 1975.

Upon his retirement, Ken became active at Sacred Heart Church, where he served in several positions, including the Director of Religious Education for two years. Professionally, he taught electronics at Fort Valley State College from 1976 until 1979 before joining the staff of Mount de Sales Academy, where he taught math and religious education from 1979 to 1987.

Ken was ordained a Permanent Deacon by Bishop Lessard at the Cathedral in Savannah in 1979. He was involved in several ministries, including Cursillo, where he served as Spiritual Director from 1979 to 2022. After moving to Macon in 1981, he was assigned as a Deacon at St. Peter Claver Parish. From 1983 to 1987, he served on the Savannah Diocese’s Pastoral Council, chairing it in his final year. Additionally, he served as a board member and treasurer of Nazareth Home (now Family Advancement Ministries).

Ken felt the calling to be a missionary and, with his wife Frances, joined the Jesuit International Volunteers in June of 1987. They committed two years of their lives to teach and minister to the boys attending the Pohnpei Agricultural Trade School on the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. After returning from his missionary service in June of 1989, he was reassigned as a Deacon to St. Peter Claver Catholic Church.

Ken’s passion for teaching continued, leading him back to Fort Valley State University in 1990 as an assistant professor. He was then assigned to St. Juliana’s Parish, where he served as the Permanent Deacon until 2024.

His memory will forever be treasured by his children, Brietta (Michael) Harkless of Warner Robins, Georgia; Kelly Mallory of Pine Mountain, Georgia; Megan (Craig) Smith of Hutchinson Island, Florida, and Kenneth Peter (Suzanne) Hutnick II of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandchildren, Jeremiah (Michelle) Moneypenny, Joshua (Felicia) Moneypenny, Mary Kate (Logan) Jenkins, Jackson (Georgia) Smith, Avery Claire (Marc) Wrigglesworth, Rowe (Adrian) Gault, Katharine Hutnick, Erin (Adrian) Palmer, and Ashlyn Hutnick; great-grandchildren, Christian (Zhane) Moneypenny, Tyler Moneypenny, Matthew Moneypenny, Jacob Moneypenny, Frances Moneypenny, Neo Mallory, Seth Jenkins, and Lucille Rose Smith; siblings, Felicia (Lewis) Keen and Dennis Hutnick; and sister-in-law, Patricia Hutnick.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel and Elizabeth Donahue Hutnick; his loving wife, Frances; brother, Gerald Hutnick; and sister-in-law, Dottie Hutnick.

A Rosary will be said in the chapel on Friday, July 4, 2025, at 5:00 p.m., with Visitation to follow at McCullough Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a Reception to follow. Ken will be laid to rest in Andersonville National Cemetery, with military honors, on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
