Obituary of Judge Kenneth N. Miller
Judge Kenneth N. Miller, age 89 of Upland, PA, formerly of
Chester, PA, died on Friday, December 12, 2025. Born June 30, 1936. Kenny attended Dewey Mann School, Class of 1950. He was a graduate of Chester High School, Class of 1954, and Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science, Administration of Justice Major and Community Service Minor, Class of 1978.
Kenny was a U.S. Army National Guard Veteran, serving from 1958-1964.
A dedicated and active member of the community, Kenny was proudly involved in numerous organizations and clubs, including; Upland Athletic Club (Member); Sponsor of the Kenny Miller Annual Award, Upland Fire Company (Honorary Member), Saint George Greek Orthodox Church (Parish Council - Lead Member/Pangar Captain), Delaware County District Justices Association (Past President multiple Years), Commonwealth of PA District Justices Association (Delco Themis Service Award Winner), NAACP Chester Chapter Freedom Award Winner, Masonic Penn Lodge # 709 F&AM (Member), A Chester Rural Cemetery Board Member and the longest standing active District Justice in PA (44 yrs) while he served.
Kenny, as he was known in the Chester Plant of Scott Paper Company, began his career in 1959 as a Stevedore on the cold and steamy docks of Chester, with his treasured bale hook always in hand. Over time, he would work his way up to Quality Control Manager, then Safety & Security Manager at the Chester plant, before eventually becoming the International Director of Safety & Security at Scott Paper World Headquarters in Essington, PA, where he would continue until his retirement in 1988. Never one to rest after "retiring," Kenny Miller decided to teach students at Chester High School in the early 90's; he taught Criminal Law, his passion, and quickly became one of the most popular teachers among young Clippers.
While at Scott Paper, he would begin a second career as a Magisterial District Justice beginning in 1968. He would continue in that role for the next 44 years, adjudicating an estimated 215,000 cases, working across the Commonwealth to improve and professionalize the role further, earning the utmost respect from fellow Judges at ALL levels of the Court System, Attorneys & Prosecutors alike and even many Defendants who almost always left his courtroom feeling very fairly treated, before officially retiring in 2012. This meant that for 20 years from 1968-1988, Kenny Miller, The Judge, held down two critical and demanding careers while somehow finding time to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree from The Pennsylvania State University, over six of those same years from 1972-1978, earning a Major in Administration of Justice and a Minor in Community Service. He often remarked how none of his accomplishments would have been made possible without the very strong support of his loving wife, Shirley.
His primary hobby was his five sons, who meant everything to him and who he would do anything for. He and his beloved wife Shirley, enjoyed their family each Summer at their home in Wildwood Crest for 35 years. He also enjoyed vacations to Greece, Italy, Acapulco, Jamaica, Saint Thomas and Hawaii, along with trips to Ohio and Texas to visit his sons. The Judge was also fortunate and proud to attend dozens of Ohio State Football Games and major Bowl Games that his son participated in, along with attending a couple of notable Super Bowls. He was very well known as a great entertainer and an extremely detailed organizer as well. Whether it be Summer parties in their Wildwood Crest Beach home, coordinating dozens of Judges Banquets involving up to 500 attendees for decades or organizing the most memorable Ohio State/Penn State Football trips, anyone could ever imagine and which still spark uncontrollable laughter and fond memories decades later from anyone who ever traveled with him, most would testify (under oath) that those experiences were always first class and quite legendary.
Whether Kenny (to those who knew him closest) or Judge (to practically everyone else), he will be fondly remembered for a life exemplified by his Service, Sacrifice, and Self-Discipline. That is: Service to his community, whether it be helping ravaged flood victims, providing Thanksgiving Dinners or Christmas Gifts to needy families, redirecting wayward youth away from a life of crime or personally committing to helping someone regain their sobriety; Sacrifice made for his own family in which he dedicated his entire adulthood toward the betterment of his family, his children's private/ college educations and ultimately their long term success, as well as other selfless acts including helping raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Juvenile Diabetes Research on behalf of his grandson; and, extreme, unwavering Self Discipline demonstrated by maintaining dual careers for 20 years straight while obtaining a college degree during 6 of those same years, all while supporting a very patient & dedicated wife and their 5 sons.
Judge Miller or Kenny, would be very proud to know that his rich legacy is forever cemented throughout Delaware County and places far beyond, with the hundreds, if not thousands, of people in need that he impacted and which will continue to be carried on by and through his 5 sons, 14 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren for many, many years to come.
