Kenneth Gale Plenty was born March 2, 1945, in Crow Agency, Montana, a son of David Plenty Hoops and Dorothy Holds the Enemy. His Crow name was Balaxxii Duup Dutchish- Captures Two Guns given to him by John Holds the Enemy. He was a member of the Bad War Deeds Clan and a child of the Big Lodge Clan. He was a member of the Native American Church and participated in many Sundances. He was adopted into the Tobacco Society by Hazel One Goose, as well as a member of the Nighthawk Society. Kenneth attended school at Crow Agency, Pretty Eagle, Hardin and Flandreau, South Dakota. He attended college at Haskell Indian Junior College.
Athletically, Kenneth was a track and cross-country runner, basketball and football player. Rodeo and horse racing were Kenneth's favorite. He was a bronc rider, bull rider, team roper and calf roper. He was a jockey and Indian relay rider racing in his first race at age 11. Kenneth was a two-time qualifier to the Indian National Finals Rodeo in team roping.
Kenneth enlisted in the United States Army serving in Vietnam. He was employed at the Sugar Beet Factory, Carpet Mill, Bureau of Indian Affairs Roads and Irrigation Department where he retired with more than 25 years of service.
Kenneth's namesake is Kenneth Gale "Kenny Boy" Shane and his son Baby Kenny Shane. Kenneth also shared his birthday with his grandson Gunner Plenty.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather David Jefferson, sisters – Gladys Jefferson, Joaney Champ, Doris Hill Elenor Plenty Hawk and Cheryl Plenty Hoops; Niece – Kaylene Shane-Red Wolf; Brothers – Howard Shane, Garland Plenty and David "Pistol" Plenty Hoops, Jr.; Nephew – Lonnie Shield. He was also preceded in death by special friends – Tony Shakespeare, Randy Real Bird, Gary Not Afraid, Melvin Paul Williamson, Ed Real Bird, Wesley Hall, Malcolm Bruce, Leland Walking Bear, Wayne Not Afraid, Casey Edmo, Duke Dixey and Donald Passes.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 55 years Fannie House Plenty, Daughter JoVonna Plenty Hoops and Hattie Sue Plenty Hoops (Marcus); Son Len (Paula) Plenty; Grandchildren Kana (Michael) Tucker, KaNeeta Wuttunee (RC Dawes), Arena Plenty (Tyrell Old Coyote); Keenan Wuttunee (Isabel Ibarra), Gunner Plenty (Kamber Good Luck), Kreedin Wuttunee; Yolanda, Aaron and Julie Minjarez; Great-grandchildren – Stylen Dun Tucker, Rustyn Fame Tucker, Brixley Rose Little Swallow, Twistyn Sage Henderson, Quincy Bay Old Coyote and Baby Girl Tucker expecting December 2024; Sisters Sandra (Myron) Shield, Vina Holds the Enemy-White, Vicky Holds the Enemy, Vivian Shane, Linda Bulltail, Lovina Fox, Colleen (Eugene) Old Elk, Peggy White, Bonnie Hawk, Ardith Hogan, Mary (Edward) Iron, Rebecca Jefferson and Lorrie House; Brothers – John (Laurena) Holds, Ernest Holds, Al Holds, Bruce (Agatha) House, and Franklin Raymond House; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Extended family includes – Pretty Eagle, Big Shoulder, Holds the Enemy, Plenty Hawk, Little Owl, Little Nest, Door, Don't Mix, Rock Above, Plainfeather, Iron Horse, Alden, Plenty Hoops, Spotted Horse, White Hip, Red Wolf, and White Fox.
The family would like to acknowledge Dr. Clark, Dr. Mosser and Eve Kramer, RN at the Crow-Northern Cheyenne I.H.S. Hospital and Sheridan VA Hospital for the care given to Kenneth.
