Kenneth Vail Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jun. 8, 2024.
Cremation will take place and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to School of Rock, c/o the funeral home.
Age 54, passed away at Borgess Medical Center on May 19, 2024. He was born in Columbia, MO, the son of Kenneth C. Vail Sr. and Sandra Jean (Downs) Vail. Ken was a kind man who had a passion for music, friendship, and family. His warm smile and gentle personality made him a joy to know. Ken was a graduate of Parchment High School Class of 1988 where he participated in band and was a member of the Choraliers. He enjoyed bowling and played many games at Eastland Bowl where he won several awards. Ken was a hard worker and was employed at The Bop Stop music store, Sav-A-Lot grocery store, delivered newspapers and Aunt Millie's Bakery. His true passion was for music. He was happiest when attending a concert, a record show, or listening to a new track with friends. He was active on social media, stayed up on current affairs and was a loyal customer of the Michigan News Agency store in downtown Kalamazoo. He enjoyed baseball and was a loyal Detroit Tigers fan. Above all Ken loved his family. He was a loving son, dedicated brother and uncle who will be missed. Ken is survived by his parents, Ken Sr. and Sandra; brother, Sam Vail; nieces, nephews; extended family and friends. He was preceded in passing by an infant brother, William Vail.
Ken is Zen
The so called listeners of rock have
Nothing on Ken
This guy lived the life
Kept a library in his head
The man didn't need no record collection,
He was a record collection!
Like his brother said he lived the life
That he wanted to live
The ultimate Anti-hero, with a Cd store in his
Bedroom and only a broken couch to lay his head
He held a torch for the music that made him
Happy, like some diehard Hispanic Catholics
Keep altars for Mother Mary
Music was his holiest of holies!
He dug the simple things, like hanging out,
Finding music, laughing at oddball record covers,
And japping at awkward comedies that
Parodied the ineptitudes of real life
Like Curb Your Enthusiasm
He made me smile, and turned me on
To hundreds of things with his passion,
Never pausing to
Give things away for free
If it meant cluing someone in who
Didn't share his experience
Sometimes he'd get mad at the lack of
Luster people seemed to have for music,
And the mindless in-fighting that so called
Music fans were always having on the Internet,
But never for too long
He mostly just wanted to laugh,
Make others smile when he was around
To help other people to just relax and have fun
That's all he wanted was to have Fun!
I'll bet he's still hoping that we work it out down
Here, and finally find his recipe
For having a blast and hanging loose
Rock'Roll forever Ken!!!

I am so shocked and saddened to learn of Ken´s passing. We dated when I was in high school, he was my first boyfriend and we shared a mutual love of music. He was a kind, generous, and creative soul. Even though we went our separate ways we kept in touch over social media and still shared our love of music with one another. I will miss seeing his music posts on social media and our occasional chats online. To Ken, Sandy, and Sam please know that I am holding you all close in my heart and send you all my love at this time. Rest in peace Ken, thank you for being sweet and kind. You will be missed.

My first memory of my son Ken enjoying music was when he was an infant standing at my record player watching the record go round. His love of music started then. I had to laugh because he actually teethed on the edge of the record player. I was probably playing a Beach Boy's or maybe a Beatles album. I'm sure it was something from the 60ty's. Giving him a life of music carried through to all of his 54 years until the very end when his brother and I continued to play music for him as he was leaving our world at Borgess Medical Center. That is where we said our final goodbye's. I will miss his messages reminding me about the next CD (of my favorite artist) that would be coming out. I will miss our weekly outings and his visits to see me. We all lost a sweet, caring person that taught us that life is about family, friends and playing a tune that can make you happy! You are still with us in our hearts and always will be.
Love, Mom

So sad to hear of Ken´s passing. To quote a Billy Joel song, "Only the Good Die Young." Ken was kind enough to take me to my first concert ever-- U2 ZooTV at the Pontiac Silverdome circa 1991-2. Here I was, maybe a sophomore or junior in HS, and a college aged music enthusiast I met at work was kind enough to invite my annoying self to come along and see the show of a lifetime, which I will always remember and be thankful to him for. We bonded over that experience and our mutual love of U2 and music in general, and remained friends over the years. Whenever I think of Ken, I think of music, record stores, his kindness and smile, and his dry sense of humor which was really funny! May God Rest his Soul, and I hope he´s blasting his favorite tunes from the soundstage in the Sky right now...

My condolences to the Vail family. I remember walking to school with Ken when we were younger..... possibly Elementary School.... almost everyday...even times hanging out at each others houses.
His Extreme Knowledge of music...along with just being able to sit and have a conversation with him will be Greatly Missed....

Ken had an incredible energy. He put his heart into things he loved - always music, and when we were kids, baseball. He was a kind soul who wanted people to be happy. I'll miss you, my friend. Peace to Sandy, Ken Sr., and Sam. He loved you all so much.
