Kermit "Rex" Darnell, 81, of Elkin, passed away at his home on Wednesday, February 4. He was born August 6, 1944, to the late Kermit Russell Darnell and Ruby Casey Darnell.
Rex dedicated more than 30 years to a career in law enforcement, serving his community with pride and integrity. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a volunteer fireman with the Arlington Fire Department. Outside of his service, he enjoyed fishing and cheering on the Atlanta Braves.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Holloway Darnell; his brother, Carl Darnell; his sister and brother in law, Linda and Ivan Parker; and his brother in law, Eugene Hemric.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Darnell of the home; his son and daughter in law, Lee and Heather Darnell of Winterville; his step-son, Richard Cox; his sister, Sheldon Hemric; his sister in law, Cynthia Darnell; grandchildren Tyler Heath, Elliana Sykes, and Leah Proctor; great grandchild Scottie Sykes; and his close friend, Wayne Combs.
A funeral service will be held Sunday February 8, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at 3:00 PM, with Rev. David Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services.
