Kermit Houser Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 5, 2025.
Kermit Ensign Houser, a beloved husband, devoted father, and cherished Grandfather (Papa and Dadu), passed away peacefully after a short illness, on Monday, December 1, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was 81 years old.

Born July 22, 1944, in Silver Lake, Ohio, Kermit was the son of the late Dr. Kermit J. and Maxine O. Houser. He graduated from Kent State University's School of Business, where he met his future wife, Merry Ann. They were happily married in March of 1969.

Upon graduation, Kermit immediately reported for active duty in the United States Navy. He served at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and later on the admiral's staff aboard the USS Forrestal Aircraft Carrier (CV-59). He continued his service in the Navy Reserve for several years and was a proud veteran.

Kermit built a long and successful career in the group insurance industry, which led to moves to Buffalo, NY; Cleveland, OH; and Detroit, MI. After eight years in Detroit, he and his brother-in-law purchased a business in Akron, Ohio. He ultimately returned to the insurance field, eventually moving to Pittsburgh, PA, where he and his family made their home. In retirement, he spent almost 10 joyful years driving school buses for North Allegheny, where he made lasting friendships.

Kermit dedicated time to his community, serving on various boards, including becoming a founding board member of the Tallmadge Rotary Club, and following his fathers footsteps by joining the Shriners of Tadmore Temple and Akron Masons. After settling in Pittsburgh, he and Merry Ann became deeply connected to Ingomar United Methodist Church, where they taught confirmation classes, served communion, and he greeted congregants as an usher. He also had a passion for bridge and was proud to have recently earned his Bronze Life Master title. Kermit and Merry Ann also shared a love for travel, exploring much of the United States together.

His greatest joy, however, was his family. Together, they created a loving, close-knit home with their children: Heather Lynn Houser, Merry Elizabeth (Neel) Bhattacharjee, and Kermit J. (Mary Catherine/MC) Houser. Nothing delighted Kermit more than the laughter of his seven grandchildren: Alex, Naiya, Audrey, Emily, Norah, Drew, and Ella, especially when they gathered for games and cards. He looked forward to summer vacations with the entire family.

Their family bond extended globally, embracing Reginald Makuwatsine and family of Zimbabwe including his son, Anesu.

Kermit is also survived by his sisters, Carol Krafft of Cincinnati and Karen (Bernie) Frye of Indianapolis, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Kermit was a warm, welcoming soul, always ready with a smile, a wave, and a humorous story or joke to share.

Condolences to Merry Ann, Kermit Jr. and the daughters and grand children at their loss. I had the pleasure of playing Bridge with Kermit on occasion but never advanced to being any kind of a Master leave alone a Bronze Master.
