Kerry Ivan Murray

Kerry "Carebear" Ivan Murray, 66, of Harrisonville, Missouri, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at KC Hospice House in Kansas City, MO, surrounded by friends and family. A Celebration of Life in honor of Kerry was held at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO, on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
Kerry was born on February 28, 1958, in Lockwood, MO, a son of Verne "Shorty" and Lena (Cooper) Murray. Kerry lived in many different cities in many different states. However, he would always call Greenfield, MO, home where he graduated High School in 1976. He met the love of his life, Rachael Nichols, in 1991, and they married on December 4, 1993 in Lee's Summit, MO. The love that these two share is inspiring to all who know them.
Kerry began his career in the construction industry in Emporia, KS, the Monday after his Friday high school graduation. Throughout his career he advanced from a carpenter to a superintendent and was very respected in his trade. He poured his passion and skill into every project he worked on and always had a dedication to doing everything the right way. Retiring in 2009, Kerry continued his dedication to the trade by doing "side jobs" for friends and family. In addition to his "side jobs" Kerry spent many an hour volunteering to help anyone who needed it, including as a "4H Dad," "Tennis Dad," "Band Dad," as well as many other roles. He brought the same level of skill and dedication to each of these projects and roles he took on.
In his free time, Kerry embraced his love for football, particularly the KC Chiefs, delved into gun building, and enjoyed cooking and smoking meat for memorable BBQ gatherings. He was famous for his home-made salsa recipe, a recipe that remains a closely held secret to this day. Kerry cherished being "Pops" to his grandson, whom he doted on constantly. He reveled in giving directions, wake up calls, check-ins, building/construction and general life advice to his wife and boys. Kerry was a steadfast supporter and encourager in every aspect of their lives and would brag to anyone who would listen-they were the pride of his life. Aside from his family, his home was a sanctuary for his sons' friends, many of whom regarded him as a second father and enjoyed his cooking, guidance and advice. Kerry's fascination with WWII stories history, aviation and nautical warfare were known to all who crossed paths with him. His quick wit, humor, and kind heart endeared him to many, offering not only jokes but also sage advice when needed. His intellect, ability to think quickly, make sound decisions and offer fantastic advice are a few of the things that made Kerry irreplaceable in every role and relationship he held. Though Kerry may no longer be with us in person, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His family takes great joy and comfort in knowing that Kerry had a relationship with Jesus and now walks amongst the angels. May his legacy of love, laughter, and guidance be a beacon of light in our lives.
Kerry was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Teresa Murray; and his nephew, Jansen Murray. He is survived by his wife of almost 31 years, Rachael Murray, of the home; his sons: Jacob Murray of Ft. Worth, TX; Austin (Ali) Murray of Pleasant Hill, MO; and Tanner (fiancé, Ruth Engling) Murray of Harrisonville, MO; his grandson, Asher Murray; his brothers: Mike (Vonnie) Murray of Haltom City, TX; and Dana (DeDe) Murray of Milan, MO; his nephews and niece: Jeremy Murray of Springfield, MO; Tyler Murray of Springfield, MO; Jessica (Cole) Eastwood of Greenwood, MO; and Zach (Emily) Bollinger of Harrisonville, MO; as well as, many friends and extended family members.
