2023
Kevin Lee Kern, 66, of Matoaca, Virginia, passed away peacefully, at home, into the arms of his Heavenly Father on November 14, 2023. He was born on October 30, 1957, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Mary Louise Bens and the late Kenneth Leroy Kern. He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Stephanie Kern; his mother, Mary Louise Bens Knott; his children, Rachel Kern (Bryan White), Kelsey Kern (Kim Brown), Brandon Kern (Nancy), Austin Emerson (Casey), Kayla Emerson (Darrell Haslacker), and Olivia Emerson (Hayden Whitley); and nine beautiful grandchildren, Skylar Swayzee (Parker Massengill), Weston White, Brandon Kern Jr., Hunter Kern, Ava Kern, Aubrey Kern, Teagan Emerson, Maya Emerson, and Talon Emerson; a great-granddaughter, Tatum Massengill; eleven siblings, Kathy Warfield, Ken Kern II (Linda), Kimberly Anderson, Krissy Schultz, Karla Boss (Ed), Karen Voellinger (John), Keith Kern (Frannie), Kelly Kern, Klaudine Radford, Kyle Kern (Pam), and Kerry Knott (Alisha); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kevin started building bridges in Maryland as a carpenter in 1981 for Corman construction. He progressively maneuvered through his career as a foreman, superintendent, project manager, regional manager, and vice president. In the mid-90’s, the company turned to Kevin to lead a project near Richmond, Virginia, which ultimately expanded into Corman’s southern region. Kevin’s mentorship and authentic leadership style helped develop countless leaders, growing Corman into one of the most respected highway/bridge contractors in Virginia.
When Kokosing acquired Corman Construction in 2018, Kevin naturally ensured a seamless transition and continued to mentor future leaders until his retirement in 2021 due to his illness. Throughout his career, Kevin exhibited exemplary leadership abilities and connected with nearly everyone he met leaving a lasting legacy for the future of Kokosing’s mid-Atlantic region.
While we know he was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan and he genuinely loved playing golf, he was happiest being Dad and Papa. Kevin had a fun-loving personality and a passion to encourage others. He had the most giving heart and he lived to serve so many wonderful people in so many different corners of his life. He was joyful and humble in every possible way!
The family would like to thank Affinity Hospice for the loving care they provided to Kevin. Your compassion, gentleness, and kindness will never be forgotten!
