In Loving Memory of Sally Ann Rutledge

Sally Ann Rutledge, 88, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026. She was born on May 1, 1937, in Charleston, W.Va., the daughter of the late Everett and Blanche Jordan. She was the former wife of the late Dr. Ralph J. "Buck" Rutledge, Jr. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Janice; her grandson, Logan J. Rutledge; and her nephew, Jeffrey A. Scheirman.

Sally is survived by her son, Mark J. Rutledge (Mirjam); her grandchildren, Dolen, Nathan, and Lawton Rutledge, and Jasper, Jelle, and Chesa Koridon; her sister-in-law, Jeannie (Joe) Scheirman; her brother-in-law, James Rutledge; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Sally was born and raised in Charleston, W.Va. She attended Wilson Junior High School, where she was a cheerleader, and later graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School. She went on to work as a secretary and office manager for Davis and Stout State Farm Insurance Company in Morgantown, W.Va.

After moving to Colonial Heights, Va., Sally became very active at Ivy Memorial Methodist Church. She worked closely with the youth group and founded a group known as "The 49ers," organizing and coordinating numerous trips and excursions and accompanying them to destinations throughout the East Coast.

She enjoyed playing tennis and bridge, but she especially excelled as an artist. Over the years, she created many beautiful paintings, often capturing meaningful places for her family members and leaving them with treasured works of art.

Sally was also deeply involved in her son Mark's swimming career, attending and chaperoning countless swim meets and championships. Alongside fellow swim mother Cynthia Peoples, she hosted hospitality rooms for Mark's team and became known as the ultimate "Swim Mom."

Her support for family athletics extended well beyond that. "Aunt Sally" could often be found cheering on her nieces and nephews at baseball games, wrestling matches, and swim meets.

Later in life, Sally moved to Mount Pleasant, S.C., where she embraced her cherished role as "Nana." She was a devoted and loving grandmother who faithfully attended her grandchildren's school and sporting events. She also played an integral role in the Logan J. Rutledge Foundation, which hosted an annual swim event honoring the life and legacy of her grandson, Logan.

Sally's door was always open to her grandchildren and their friends. She played an important role in their upbringing, generously giving her time, love, and encouragement. She was known not only for the snacks and laughter she shared, but also for occasionally sneaking little "surprises" under their plates to brighten their day.

Above all, Sally lived a life defined by generosity and devotion to others. Her kindness, warmth, and unwavering support for her family will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.

A graveside service and Celebration of Life honoring Sally, beloved Mom, Nana, and Aunt Sally, will be held at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Sally had a great love for flowers, but her heart truly belonged to her family and friends. In her memory, the family would deeply appreciate donations made to the Lowcountry Aquatic Project Swimming (LAPS) in lieu of flowers.
