Kevin McKinney Obituary
Published by Legacy on Nov. 5, 2025.
It is with both heavy hearts and joyous spirits that we celebrate the life of Kevin L. McKinney, a devoted husband, beloved father, and a committed EMT, who will be remembered for his infectious humor and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Kevin, aged 53, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on December 20, 1971, in Cincinnati to William E. and Carolyn (Godsey) McKinney, Kevin was the cherished big brother of Krista. He found his true love in Emily Distler while working in the auto parts industry, delivering parts to another dealership. The connection was immediate, leading to their beautiful union on October 25, 1997. Together, they created a loving family that included their three daughters: Erin, Kathryn, and Julie. Known affectionately as the "girl dad," Kevin relished every moment spent with his daughters, from thrilling trips to Kings Island to beloved family vacations in Gatlinburg, TN.
Kevin's professional life saw him excel as a Wholesale Parts Manager at Joseph Toyota, but it was his dedication to service that truly defined him. For 23 years, he served with distinction at the Bright Fire Department, and also contributed to the Greendale Fire/EMS and Sunman Rescue 20. His colleagues were like family, and his sense of humor - sometimes delightfully dark - brought joy to many. A passionate fan of the Cincinnati Reds, 80s music, and Star Wars, Kevin embraced life with an enthusiasm that inspired those around him.
A member of the Southeastern Indiana Emmaus Community, Kevin deepened his faith in God and shared that love with others. In a beautiful act of devotion, he and Emily were baptized together on June 9, 2024, strengthening their bond and their commitment to service.
Kevin's legacy will live on through his beloved wife, Emily (Distler) McKinney; his three wonderful daughters, Erin, Kathryn, and Julie; and his dear sister, Krista McKinney Suggs. He will also be missed by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, David and Cynthia Distler; sisters-in-law, Melissa Daughterty, Elizabeth (Kristopher) Schwarte, and Jillian (Triston) Urban; as well as many aunts, uncles, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kevin was preceded in death by his parents: William E. and Carolyn (Godsey) McKinney.
We invite all who knew and loved Kevin to join us in celebrating his life. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Bright Christian Church, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. the fire department will conduct an accountability pinning ceremony, leading into the funeral service that will commence at 1 p.m. Pastor Greg Edens will officiate the service, guiding us in honoring Kevin's remarkable journey.
