Kevin Sexton Obituary

Kevin Charles Sexton
October 29, 2024
On October 29, 2024, a light went out. Kevin Charles Sexton was the fourth of eight children born to Lois and John. He had five sisters and two brothers. An alumnus of Most Holy Rosary Elementary, Kevin spent two years at Bishop Ludden before graduating from Corcoran in the Class of 2010 with significant college credits. He immediately enlisted in the Army Reserves, where he earned awards for marksmanship and hand-to-hand combat. In 2012, Kevin graduated from OCC with an Associate's Degree in General Studies and went on to take classes at SUNY Oswego and Syracuse University. For the last eleven years, he worked at Wegmans in the meat and seafood department. He took pride in his work and was beloved by his coworkers.
From the time he was little, Kevin was always a gifted athlete. As soon as he could walk, he was climbing-scaling the galvanized steel basketball pole in the driveway, much to his own joy and his mother's terror. Kevin continued to excel at every sport or talent he attempted - be it skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, lacrosse, soccer, hiking, canoeing, teaching himself to play piano, or free handing a stencil of Kurt Vonnegut to make paintings. His trivia team took league champion two seasons in a row, and he won the stein holding contest at the riot race at Prison City Brewing in Auburn just weeks ago. Kevin loved attending music festivals and concerts and was the life of many parties. There was no adventure he was not up to attempt, from the annual infamous three-day canoe trip on the Allegheny River, to his 2015 road trip across the country and back with three other people in a secondhand sedan. Kevin was a fantastic copilot when driving, and never turned down a spontaneous road trip to a protest, a ski trip, or a Buffalo Bills game. He took great joy in being an uncle to his 5.33 niblings, and was always available to practice sports, play video games, or make silly faces at a baby. He was a constant source of life and joy and humor.
There is a story about Kevin that his family wants everyone to know - the mystery of the Blue Moons. During their cross-country road trip in the spring of 2015, Kevin and three friends went for a hike at Yosemite National Park on his birthday. They stopped for a brief break at the top of a waterfall, and looking down, Kevin reached into the stream and pulled out four ice cold Blue Moon beers, one for each of them. When we remember Kevin, we ask you to remember him like this - drinking a cold beer beside a mountain stream on a beautiful day.
Kevin was predeceased by his paternal grandparents; maternal grandfather; great uncle; and two cousins.
Surviving are his parents, Lois and John; siblings, Katie (Adam), Erin (Kord), Colleen (Nate), Meghan (Christian), Patrick (Maddy), Robbie (Abby), and Molly, and a dozen cousins and niblings.
Those who loved Kevin may call on Sunday, November 3, 2024, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Those who attend the calling hours are encouraged to wear Bills Gear in honor of Kevin.
A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Lucy Catholic Church, 432 Gifford St., Syracuse.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send donations in honor of Kevin, to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 917 Avery Ave., Syracuse, NY 13204.
