Khem Chhetri, affectionately known as Vishwamitra, blessed the world with his spirited presence on October 18, 1933, in the beautiful country of Bhutan. He lived a life marked by empathy, generosity, and inspiration, and was a beacon of light to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Throughout his life, Khem displayed an unwavering commitment to his faith, Hinduism, and in the words of the Upanishads, "The little space within the heart is as great as the vast universe. The heavens and the earth are there, and the sun and the moon and the stars."
Khem's journey led him from Bhutan to Woodbridge, Virginia, and ultimately Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he spent his last years. He was an inspiring figure in the farming community, dedicating his life to agriculture and nurturing the land just as he did the souls around him. His love for his work was only surpassed by his passion for religious endeavors. His spirit found joy in religious tours, enlightening others with his talks, and the inception of temples and ashrams in Bhutan, India & Nepal. His devotion was not only a testament to his faith but also a reflection of his generous nature. What mattered most to Khem was helping the needy, and he did so with a selfless heart and an empathetic soul.
Khem is survived by his devoted wife, Krishna Chhetri for 65 years, his sons Bishwanath Chhetri, Kashi Chhetri, daughters-in-law Bal Niroula, Arati Chhetri, grandchildren Kalpana Rai, Sameer Chhetri, Samira Chetri and Yashica Chhetri. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bala and Man Chhetri. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him, a testament to a life well-lived and a man greatly loved.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet his family Thursday, February 6, 2025, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Lambie Funeral Home 8000 Rowland Avenue (At Rhawn Street) Philadelphia, PA 19136. His service will be held at 11:00 am at the funeral home.
We invite all who knew Khem to share their memories and upload photos to his memorial page. As we remember his life, let us celebrate the empathetic, generous, inspiring, and spirited man that was Khem Chhetri. Just as the Bhagavad Gita states, "The soul is neither born, and nor does it die," let us remember that Khem's spirit will forever be with us.

It is difficult to navigate the life journey to both 'live and die' a hero! But you did!

In loving memory of a remarkable man (late dad Khem Chhetri) who touched the lives of many from his homeland to refugee huts to Harrisburg. Your kindness, compassion, wisdom, and unwavering commitment for common humanity, democratic freedom and dignity will forever be remembered and cherished. Though you may no longer be with us, your true spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved you so much.

I met respected Baba three times in Harrisburg and Philadelphia in the recent years. To me, he´s one of the calmest human beings and a highly respectable persona I have ever met. Loaded with courage, conviction and conscience, he lived and died HERO -a fighter with lived experience as a former refugee from Bhutan !
